What do we learn from Hebrew here?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16416 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hegar-2-e1624588406832.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lost in translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hagar says,\u00a0<em>&#8220;Have I also here seen Him who sees me?&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0The translation makes an obvious attempt to present the original Hebrew sentence as comprehensible \u2013if it is translated literally, it says, \u201cI saw\u00a0<strong>after\u00a0<\/strong>the One (or,\u00a0<strong>the back<\/strong>\u00a0of the One) who sees me.\u201d This &#8220;after&#8221; or &#8220;back&#8221; (acharai, \u05d0\u05d7\u05e8\u05d9) is omitted altogether in most English translations:<strong>\u00a0the translators probably weren\u2019t sure about the meaning of this word.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16417 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Hagar-3a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Hagar-3a.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Hagar-3a-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moses\u2019 experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, later in the Bible we find another example of this same word. In a famous scene from Exodus 33, when Moses asks God to show him His glory, &#8220;the LORD said, \u2018I will cover you with My hand while I pass by.
