The Holy Names in Angels<\/strong><\/p>\n

When we hear the word \u201cangel\u201d many of us think about adorable babies sitting on clouds in heaven. But in fact, the true angels of the Bible are busy messengers shuttling between heaven and earth. Some of these angels even have names. Do you know the true meaning of these sacred names?<\/p>\n

The Divine Messengers<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bible is full of stories in which God communicates with human beings through spiritual emissaries known as \u201cangels.\u201d In Hebrew the word for angel is\u00a0malakh\u00a0<\/em>(\u05de\u05dc\u05d0\u05da) which means \u201cone who is sent.\u201d Most of the Biblical angels are unidentified, but the most important archangels have names:\u00a0Michael and Gabriel. Do you know what these Hebrew names actually mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Four Sacred Hebrew Names<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael\u00a0<\/strong>is comprised of two Hebrew words: Mi (\u05de\u05d9) + Ka-El (\u05db\u05d0\u05dc) meaning,\u00a0\u201cWho is like God?\u201d. Gabriel<\/strong>\u00a0is also comprised of two Hebrew words: Gavar (\u05d2\u05d1\u05e8) + El (\u05d0\u05dc) meaning,\u00a0\u201cGod is mighty\u201d<\/strong>. Outside the Bible, the apocryphal tradition adds two more angelic names.\u00a0Uriel\u00a0<\/strong>which comes from the words Uri (\u05d0\u05e8\u05d9) + El (\u05d0\u05dc) means\u00a0\u201cLight of God\u201d. Raphael<\/strong>\u00a0from the word Refa (\u05e8\u05e4\u05d0) + El (\u05d0\u05dc) means\u00a0\u201cGod heals\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nReceive the Scriptures as God intended<\/strong><\/p>\n

What do these names have in common?\u00a0The ending \u201cEl\u201d – one of the most sacred names of God in Hebrew.<\/strong>\u00a0This is fitting because the role of an angel is to serve as God\u2019s messenger, bringing good tidings.<\/p>\n
