He told them that although the situation was dire, help was on the way: God would send a savior to deliver the people of Israel. He did not describe a majestic king or a valiant warrior. Instead, the coming Messiah would be a far gentler, less physically impressive figure. Who was this prophet?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20375 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/safe_image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/safe_image.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/safe_image-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Isaiah\u2019s Messianic Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Although he lived seven hundred years before Christ, the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, was one of the most accurate forecasters of the arrival of Jesus. Like many of the Hebrew prophets, Isaiah anticipated deliverance at the hands of a Messianic figure.\u00a0<strong>But instead of a powerful king, Isaiah expected the Messiah to be meek, downtrodden, and wounded.<\/strong>\u00a0He would be so afflicted that he would even take on the sins of all of humanity.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20377 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/suffering-1a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/suffering-1a.jpg 496w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/suffering-1a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>An E<\/strong><strong>xalted Servant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Isaiah refers to this self-sacrificing figure simply as the \u201cServant of the Lord\u201d or\u00a0<em>Eved YHWH<\/em>\u00a0(<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u05e2\u05d1\u05d3<\/strong> <strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d4<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">) in the original Hebrew.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0You might think that \u201cservant\u201d is a disparaging term. On the contrary, in the days of the Bible, the word\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">eved<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0(servant) was a title of enormous honor given by a king to only his most trusted advisor.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20378 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/suffering-2-e1645079891800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Get a True Grasp of the Scriptures<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Hebrew word\u00a0<strong><em>eved<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0comes from the root ABD (\u05e2\u05d1\u05d3), which means\u00a0<strong>\u201cto work.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0While this root has a wide range of interpretations, it always refers to serving someone other than yourself.
