In the Book of Genesis, the Lord told Abram that all the land that he could see in all directions would belong to him and his offspring (Gen.13:14-15). But what is the deeper meaning of God’s directions to Abram, when we read them in Hebrew?<\/p>\n

God’s promise to Abraham<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Genesis 13, God reaffirms the promise of the land to Abram and his offspring:<\/p>\n

“Look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward;<\/em>\u202f<\/em><\/strong>for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever<\/strong>.”<\/em>\u00a0(Gen.13:14-15).<\/p>\n

The four Hebrew words used for the directions give us a fascinating insight.<\/p>\n

The real Biblical directions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Biblical Hebrew has an intense physicality, and these words describe more than just directions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Negba<\/strong>: Means to the south or to the\u00a0Negev<\/em>, the\u00a0desert region of southern Israel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • <\/li>\n
  • \"\"<\/li>\n
  • <\/li>\n
  • Yama:<\/strong>\u00a0Means to the west. Sea is\u00a0yam<\/em>\u00a0in Hebrew, so it literally\u00a0means to the sea, which lies to the west<\/strong>\u00a0of Israel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • <\/li>\n
    • Kedma:\u00a0<\/strong>Means to the east. In Gen 2:8, it is stated that the garden of Eden was placed in “mikedem”<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Tzfona:\u00a0<\/strong>Means to the north. This refers to the mountain of\u00a0Zaphon<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in Syria, which lies to the north of Israel.<\/li>\n

        The original Hebrew name of Safed, \u201cTzfat\u201d, may be related to the word tzofeh, to look out, as the views from (and of) this mountaintop city are simply breathtaking.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
