One of the more obscure names for God used by Jews is Ha-Makom. This literally means \u201cthe place.\u201d What does this signify? Is God a place? How did this rather ordinary word become one of God\u2019s holiest names?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22633 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/place-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/place-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/place-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What can we learn from Jacob\u2019s Dream?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most famous stories in the Book of Genesis, is Jacob\u2019s dream where angels ascend and descend a ladder to heaven. It begins with these words, \u201cHe came to a certain\u00a0<strong>place\u00a0<\/strong>and stopped there for the night, for the sun had set\u201d (Gen. 28:11). In Hebrew, \u201cplace\u201d is\u00a0<strong><em>makom<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(\u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05dd). Where is this place?<strong>\u00a0It is strange that the Torah, which is usually full of geographical details, does not specify the location.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22634 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/makom-shalom-logo1-e1658382382851.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"304\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Place Transcending Space<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to an ancient Jewish interpretation of this verse, the\u00a0<strong><em>makom\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>which Jacob encountered is not a physical location, but God\u2019s presence itself. The rabbis of the Talmud famously explained,\u00a0<strong>\u201cGod is the place of the world, and the world is not His place.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0In other words, God cannot be limited to one individual spot. Rather, God transcends space, and he is accessible to all people in all places.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22635 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/place-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/place-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/place-3-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Discover the depths of the Bible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To this day, it is common to hear Jews refer to God as\u00a0<strong><em>Ha-Makom<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cthe place\u201d) in prayer.
