A badge of shame? A tattoo? These are just guesses, because\u00a0<strong>no one is quite sure what the mark placed by God upon Cain looked like<\/strong>. The Hebrew word in Genesis 4:15 for the mark is\u00a0<em>ot\u00a0<\/em>(\u05d0\u05d5\u05ea), literally meaning a \u201csign\u201d. Following the Flood, God displays a rainbow in the sky as a \u201csign\u201d that he will never again destroy the earth (Gen. 9:12). It may not have even been visible. Contrary to what most Bible readers assume, it\u00a0<strong>was not intended to be a negative<\/strong>\u00a0stigma.
