This took place at the Temple of Jerusalem. But in Golgotha, the skull-shaped hill outside the city, Jesus was sacrificed on the Cross. Not for God, but for man. As it is said in Ephesians 2:13, \u201cNow in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ\u201d. But what does this sacrifice truly mean?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23727 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1195535062737586436.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1195535062737586436.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/1195535062737586436-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Hebrew Word for Offering\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Old Testament is brimming with descriptions of various sacrifices to the Lord that were performed by the priests in the Tabernacle. Although each type of offering has its own name,\u00a0<strong>the main Hebrew word for sacrifice is <\/strong><strong>\u05e7\u05b8\u05e8\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05df<\/strong><strong> korban. This comes from the root <\/strong><strong>\u05e7\u05e8\u05d1<\/strong><strong> KRB meaning \u201cto approach.\u201d So literally, the Hebrew word for a sacrificial offering means \u201ccoming close.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Why is this?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23731 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/approach-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/approach-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/approach-4-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Generosity\u2019s Power<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has ever put a lot of energy into selecting a gift for a loved one knows how giving brings us closer to one another. Similarly, an Israelite who made an offering to the Lord approaches God by coming near to his house \u2013 the Temple \u2013 in Jerusalem. The animal was close to God when it was laid on the altar.\u00a0<strong>Seeing the sacrificial blood of the animal made the person aware of their own mortality. They were then overcome with the presence of the Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/approach-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/approach-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/approach-2-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Draw Near to the Authentic Words of Scripture\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is precisely the reason that Paul says that we are \u201cbrought near by the blood of Christ\u201d (Eph. 2:13). The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was not just an offering but the ultimate\u00a0<em>korban<\/em>, Jesus\u2019 final act of drawing near to his father.
