But when he pronounced terrifying prophecies about the future, Jesus was emulating one particular prophet more than anyone else. Do you know who this man was?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28469 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-2-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Den of Thieves<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When Jesus entered the Temple and overturned the tables of the moneychangers, he was following in the footsteps of one of the greatest prophets of ancient Israel. Six centuries earlier, this man had condemned the people for turning the House of God into a\u00a0<strong>\u201cden of thieves\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(Jer. 7:11).\u00a0<strong>Jesus used precisely the same phrase\u00a0<\/strong>when he saw the immoral business practices taking place in the same holy place.\u00a0<strong>This man was the prophet Jeremiah.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28470 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-3-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Lord lifts up<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Jeremiah lived in the late 7th century BCE and much of his life was spent trying to stop the Jewish people from sinning. He warned them about the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. In the original Hebrew of the Bible,\u00a0<strong>the name Jeremiah is\u00a0<em>Yirmiyahu<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u05d9\u05b4\u05e8\u05b0\u05de\u05b0\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4\u05d5\u05bc<\/strong><strong> meaning \u201cthe Lord (<em>yahu<\/em>) lifts up (<em>yarim<\/em>).\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0This seems like an overly cheerful name for a man known as the \u201cweeping prophet.\u201d But in fact, the name is perfectly apt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28471 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/weeping-4-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lift up your knowledge of Scripture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet changes his tone from condemnation to consolation.\u00a0<strong>He tells the people that despite their past sins, God has not rejected them.<\/strong>\u00a0The Lord will restore Jerusalem and establish a \u201cnew covenant\u201d with his people in the future.
