One of the biggest questions facing religious people in every age is the relationship between heaven and earth. How exactly does a spiritual God come into contact with physical beings? What does it mean for the pure and incorporeal to encounter the impure and corporeal? The Hebrew Bible has a very distinctive word for God\u2019s coming into the world. But you can only appreciate it, when you read it in Hebrew.<\/p>\n

One word sums it all up<\/strong><\/p>\n

The original language of the Bible, Hebrew, is a very succinct language.\u00a0Sometimes one Hebrew word can have a dozen different meanings in translation<\/strong>. One of the richest words in the Hebrew language is the word\u00a0pakad\u00a0<\/em>\u05e4\u05e7\u05d3<\/strong>. In its most basic sense, this means \u201cto\u00a0appoint<\/strong>\u201d. For example, King Cyrus declares \u201cthe Lord, the God of heaven\u2026has\u00a0charged (pakad<\/em>)<\/strong>\u00a0me to build him a house at Jerusalem in Judah\u201d (Ezra 1:2).<\/p>\n

Divine Visitation<\/strong><\/p>\n

But\u00a0Pakad\u00a0<\/em>has deeper divine meanings<\/strong>. For example, prior to the Isaac\u2019s birth, \u201cthe Lord\u00a0visited\u00a0<\/strong>Sarah as He had said\u201d (Gen. 21:1). This is not a physical visit, but rather God keeping his promise to Sarah. Conversely, when God punishes evildoers, the same word is used, \u201cthe Lord will\u00a0punish\u00a0<\/strong>the arrogant boasting of the king of Assyria\u201d (Isa. 10:12). Here the Hebrew word\u00a0pakad<\/em>, is used for \u201cpunish\u201d because the Lord will cause his wrath to be visited upon the Assyrians.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hebrew: Learn to read between the lines<\/strong><\/p>\n

These three verses illustrate three different<\/strong>\u00a0ways in which the God of Israel has a relationship with human beings: appointing, visiting and punishing<\/strong>. Only when read in the original Hebrew can you see that these are all one word \u2013\u00a0pakad\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 which is the essence of God\u2019s identity in the world.<\/p>\n
