Walt Disney once told Charles Schulz he wasn’t good enough to draw background art.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Form letter. Very polite.<\/p>\n

“We only hire the very finest artists.”<\/p>\n

Sparky wasn’t one of them.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

His yearbook rejected his cartoons.<\/p>\n

His school gave him a zero in physics.<\/p>\n

He failed every subject in eighth grade.<\/p>\n

The other kids called him “Sparky”<\/p>\n

\u2014 after a horse in a comic strip.<\/p>\n

They were calling him an animal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Paul Harvey said it best:<\/p>\n

“Sparky wasn’t actually disliked by the other youngsters.<\/p>\n

No one cared enough about him to dislike him.”<\/p>\n

So, this invisible boy did something strange.<\/p>\n

He didn’t try to prove Disney wrong.<\/p>\n

He wrote his autobiography in cartoons instead.<\/p>\n

Named the main character after himself.<\/p>\n

Charlie Brown.<\/p>\n

A kid whose kite never flies.<\/p>\n

Whose team never wins.<\/p>\n

Whose crush never notices him.<\/p>\n

Then Schulz did something the network executives hated.<\/p>\n

He put Luke 2 at the center of his<\/p>\n

Christmas special<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

“Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy…”<\/p>\n

They told him to cut it.<\/p>\n

Too religious.<\/p>\n

He refused.<\/p>\n

At Christmastime, millions of people will watch that scene.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A loser became the messenger.<\/p>\n

Disney said he wasn’t good enough.<\/p>\n

God said otherwise.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

(Read this today as I was discovering things about one of my favorite cartoonists.<\/p>\n
