This moment in Scripture—the changing of Abram’s name— reverberates throughout history. This one Bible verse is a transformation of identity, destiny, and purpose that still shapes the world today. — Genesis 17:5

He says the name. Not Abram. Not anymore. Abraham. Nearby, Sarah speaks her own name. It, too, has changed. They stand together in the quiet, the sound of their new names lingering between them. They cannot see what has been given to them. But something has been placed in their names. A breath has been added to it— soft, nearly hidden. He says the name again, slower this time. A-bra-ham. The breath is there, small and unnoticed to anyone not listening for it. But he hears it. A whisper of something greater. Abraham looks at Sarah, and she hears it too.

Many people imagine Abraham as a distant, gentle figure from Bible stories. But for the Jewish people, he is Avraham Avinu— Abraham our father. He represents the very beginning of our identity as a people chosen by God, called not just to exist, but to serve a divine mission in the world.

Through centuries of exile, persecution, and uncertainty, we have clung to God’s covenant with Abraham—the promise that we are part of something greater than ourselves, connected to God’s eternal plan.

Before this moment, Abram was a single man in a vast ancient world. His name meant “exalted father”—a respectable title, but a limited one. But then, God added the Hebrew letter heh to each of their names—a letter from His own holy Name. And with this, everything changed. Abram became Abraham, meaning “father of many.” Sarai became Sarah.

With that letter heh, Jewish tradition teaches that God placed something of Himself into the very identity of Abraham and

Sarah. And not only them. Their descendants—the Jewish people—carry God’s Name as well.

To bear God’s Name is to live in a way that reflects His character. Abraham and his descendants were called to bless the world—to bring hope, justice, compassion, and faith into a world so often marked by violence and despair. And through Abraham’s family, God’s blessing would reach all nations.

This Scripture invites each of us to reflect, today. What names or identities have we accepted that limit us? Are we defined by our past or our failures? Or can we step into the identity God offers that’s filled with purpose and promise?

If God could transform Abram into Abraham, then none of us are too small for His calling—to believe, to step forward, and to become a blessing to the world.

No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
