He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The devil said to him, &#8220;If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus answered, &#8220;It is written: &#8216;Man does not live on bread alone.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And he said to him, &#8220;I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So if you worship me, it will all be yours.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus answered, &#8220;It is written: &#8216;Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. &#8220;If you are the Son of God,&#8221; he said, &#8220;throw yourself down from here.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For it is written: &#8220;&#8216;He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus answered, &#8220;It says: &#8216;Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-13:\u00a0 After having been baptized in the Jordan River, Jesus is led into the desert where he is tempted by the devil for 40 days.\u00a0 Notice that each time Jesus is tempted by the devil, Jesus fights back by quoting Scripture.\u00a0 In response to the devil\u2019s first temptation Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3 in the Old Testament.\u00a0 In response to the devil\u2019s second temptation Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:13.\u00a0 In response to the devil\u2019s third temptation Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16.\u00a0 What is Jesus doing?\u00a0 In response to each specific temptation he faces, Jesus recites a verse from Scripture that helps him to do the right thing in that situation.\u00a0\u00a0In all likelihood Jesus is reciting these verses from memory, since the only place you could read a copy of Scripture back in Jesus\u2019 time was in the synagogue.<\/p>\n<p>Because Jesus had the habit of storing up the word of God in his heart, Jesus was equipped and ready to fight the devil when temptation attacks came.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0 From time to time you and I will be tempted to do what we know deep down to be the wrong thing.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Our most important weapon in our fight against temptation is the word of God.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0When we store up the word of God in our heart, we\u2019ll be quicker to discern when temptation comes, quicker to know what the right thing is to do, and more able to do the right thing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder that the word of God is also called \u201cthe sword of the Spirit\u201d (see Ephesians 6:17).\u00a0 It\u2019s because the word of God is your weapon against temptation.<\/p>\n<p>As Psalm 1:1-3 says:<\/p>\n<p><em><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But his delight is in the law of the\u00a0LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.
