{"id":11116,"date":"2020-08-24T20:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-08-25T03:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/luke_4_1-13-copy\/"},"modified":"2020-08-23T17:46:45","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T00:46:45","slug":"luke_4_14-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/luke_4_14-24\/","title":{"rendered":"When You Feel Rejected, Hang Onto God\u2019s Gracious Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Luke 4:14-24\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+4%3A14-24&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11118 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/200825.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/200825.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/200825-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/200825-450x225.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Luke 4:14-24.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 4:14 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verse 14:\u00a0 Jesus had spent 40 days in the desert, praying, fasting, drawing near to God and also resisting temptation.\u00a0 He returns to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, ready to start his public ministry.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Go out of your way to draw near to God.\u00a0 Then you can go back into the world where you are called to work, study or serve in the power of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Protect your alone time with God.<\/strong>\u00a0 Each day get fueled up in His Word and in His presence so that you\u2019re ready to tackle the day.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 4:15 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 15:\u00a0 Jesus was an amazing preacher of God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 He\u2019s the lamb of God who takes away our sins.\u00a0 He\u2019s also the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) when it comes to preaching God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 4:16 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 16:\u00a0 Jesus goes back to his hometown of Nazareth where he grew up.\u00a0 There he goes to church (i.e. \u201cthe synagogue\u201d), \u201c<em>as was his custom<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 In other words, Jesus\u2019 habit, or \u201ccustom\u201d, was to go to church regularly.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t just spend alone time with God.\u00a0 Jesus also protected his time with his church family.\u00a0 Likewise,\u00a0<strong>if you want to have a healthy relationship with God, don&#8217;t just protect your alone time with God; protect your time in church as well.<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t let lesser things get in the way of being regularly plugged into your church family.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 4:17 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 17:\u00a0 Back in Jesus\u2019 time people didn\u2019t carry their own Bibles.\u00a0 The only places where you would find a physical copy of the Scriptures would be in large papyrus scrolls located in the temple in Jerusalem (where worship sacrifices were offered), the local synagogue (where Jews would go to hear Scripture being read and taught), and possibly the king\u2019s palace (if the king was a God-fearing Jew).\u00a0 We ought to thank God that today we can so easily access His precious Word.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus goes to the local synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth.\u00a0 There Jesus is invited to read and teach from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah.\u00a0 So Jesus stands up, takes the scroll and specifically finds Isaiah 61:1-2, which he then reads out loud to the people.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 4:18-21 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0to proclaim the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him,<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and he began by saying to them, &#8220;Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 18-21:\u00a0 Jesus reads this famous passage from Isaiah and then sits down, signaling to the synagogue that he is about to teach.\u00a0 His first words are \u201cToday this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.\u201d (v21)\u00a0 In other words, Jesus was claiming to be the fulfillment of these famous prophetic words that Isaiah wrote about the Messiah.\u00a0 These words which the Jews had been hearing for approximately 700 years were now coming to pass through the life and ministry of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Jesus is the Messiah the Jews had for centuries been waiting for and whom the Old Testament prophets had been prophesying about.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Jesus came to do for us all the things that Isaiah 61:1-2 talks about:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Jesus came to preach good news to all of us who are poor (both the materially poor and the spiritually poor);<br \/>\n&#8211; Jesus came to proclaim freedom for all of us who were imprisoned by sin;<br \/>\n&#8211; Jesus came to proclaim recovery of sight for all of us who are blind (whether physically or spiritually);<br \/>\n&#8211; Jesus came to release all of us who are spiritually oppressed;<br \/>\n&#8211; Jesus came to proclaim for us the year of the Lord\u2019s favor, ushering a new time when people would experience the favour of God like never before.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 4:22-24 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t this Joseph&#8217;s son?&#8221; they asked.<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus said to them, &#8220;Surely you will quote this proverb to me: &#8216;Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;I tell you the truth,&#8221; he continued, &#8220;no prophet is accepted in his hometown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 22-24:\u00a0 People spoke well of Jesus and were amazed at how graciously he spoke.\u00a0 Whereas Old Testament prophets and John the Baptist had a message filled with judgment for the people, Jesus spoke words of grace.\u00a0 This amazed the people.\u00a0 It\u2019s a reminder that\u00a0<strong>we want our words to be full of grace when we communicate with others<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While all spoke well of Jesus, a number of people in his hometown of Nazareth had a hard time believing that Jesus, the local carpenter\u2019s son, could be the Messiah (\u201cIsn\u2019t this Joseph\u2019s son?\u201d \u2013 v22) or that Jesus actually performed any miracles earlier in Capernaum, a town about 50 kilometres away (v23).\u00a0 Sensing this rejection, Jesus says, \u201cno prophet is accepted in his hometown\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn form this?\u00a0 If Jesus faced rejection from even his closest family and friends,\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t be surprised if at first the people closest to you are offended by or resistant to your newfound faith in Jesus.\u00a0 But don\u2019t give up.\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t give up and eventually much of his family would later come to believe in him.\u00a0 Likewise, if you don\u2019t give up and you keep following Jesus, God will use your life to bless your family and lead them to Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Heavenly Father, thank You for the good news, freedom, recovery, release and favour we find in Your Son Jesus Christ and His Word.\u00a0 Thank You for making me to have healthy relationships, beginning with my relationship with You.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><em>I pray that every day I would guard my time with You as well as my time in church.\u00a0 I pray that, like Your Son Jesus, gracious words would habitually come from my lips.
