'><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Luke 9:51-62\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+9%3A51-62&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11483 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/200918.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/200918.png 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/200918-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/200918-450x225.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Luke 9:51-62.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 9:51-56 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.<br \/>\n<sup>52\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;<br \/>\n<sup>53\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.<br \/>\n<sup>54\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, &#8220;Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>55\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But Jesus turned and rebuked them,<br \/>\n<sup>56\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and they went to another village.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 51-56:\u00a0\u00a0Why did the Samaritan village reject Jesus because Jesus was heading for Jerusalem?\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s because culturally Jews and Samaritans did not associate with one another and considered one another enemies.\u00a0\u00a0The Samaritans rejected Jesus based on the fact that Jesus and his disciples were Jews heading to the Jewish city of Jerusalem.\u00a0\u00a0Fueled by anger and pride, two of Jesus\u2019 closest disciples, James and John, offer to call fire down from heaven to destroy the Samaritan village that didn\u2019t welcome them.\u00a0\u00a0No wonder Jesus gave James and John the nicknames \u201csons of thunder\u201d (Mark 3:17).\u00a0\u00a0However, Jesus rebukes them for this suggestion and they move on.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0Here we see how gracious and gentle Jesus was in the face of rejection.\u00a0\u00a0Even though the Samaritan village had disrespected Jesus and rejected him, Jesus refused to retaliate.\u00a0\u00a0I believe he did this for two reasons: (1) he trusted God his Father to be his defender and justifier; and (2) Jesus is a gentleman who honours our freedom to choose, even when we make the wrong or foolish choice to reject him.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m amazed by Jesus\u2019 patience and kindness.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 9:57-62 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>57\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, &#8220;I will follow you wherever you go.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>58\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus replied, &#8220;Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 57-58:\u00a0\u00a0Following Jesus gives us a peace, a comfort and a joy that the world cannot give, but at the same time verse 58 shows us that if we choose to follow Jesus, we must be prepared that our lives will not always be comfortable.\u00a0\u00a0Following Jesus means, like Jesus, recognizing that our ultimate home is not on earth but in heaven.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Luke 9:59-60 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>59\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He said to another man, &#8220;Follow me.&#8221; But the man replied, &#8220;Lord, first let me go and bury my father.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>60\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus said to him, &#8220;Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 59-60:\u00a0\u00a0Does Jesus mean in verse 60 that to follow him means that we are to completely abandon and ignore our parents, or that we cannot even pay our respects to them when they die?\u00a0\u00a0No.\u00a0\u00a0In this case it is quite possible that the man who said, \u201cLord, first let me go and bury my father\u201d did not have any funeral to go to any time soon; rather what he meant was, \u201cI\u2019ll follow you, Lord, but only after my dad has passed away\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus\u2019 response \u201cLet the dead bury their own dead\u201d means \u201cyou\u2019ve spent enough time doing things that have no eternal value. Don\u2019t delay any longer but focus on God\u2019s kingdom now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another lesson is that as followers of Jesus, our number one affiliation and loyalty is to God, above and beyond our loyalty to any other person, even our parents and family.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Luke 9:61-62 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>61\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Still another said, &#8220;I will follow you, Lord;
