{"id":11744,"date":"2020-10-01T20:00:37","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T03:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/luke_12_35-48-copy\/"},"modified":"2020-09-27T16:06:37","modified_gmt":"2020-09-27T23:06:37","slug":"luke_12_49-59","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/luke_12_49-59\/","title":{"rendered":"The Price of Peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Luke 12:49-59\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+12%3A49-59&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11746 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/201002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/201002.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/201002-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/201002-450x225.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Luke 12:49-59.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Luke 12:49 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>49\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 49:\u00a0\u00a0What fire did Jesus come to bring?\u00a0\u00a0Some scholars think the \u201cfire\u201d here refers to Jesus judging the world one day.\u00a0\u00a0Others think that this fire refers to the Holy Spirit whom God the Father would send upon the church later in Acts 2.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps it\u2019s both.\u00a0\u00a0In any event, in order for that \u201cfire\u201d to happen, Jesus would first have to go through a \u201cbaptism\u201d, described in the next verse.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Luke 12:50 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 50:\u00a0\u00a0Jesus was baptized in Luke 3, so what other \u201cbaptism\u201d would Jesus still need to undergo?\u00a0\u00a0The baptism Jesus is referring to here is his coming suffering and death on the cross.\u00a0\u00a0Here we see the humanity of Jesus and \u201chow distressed\u201d he is as he awaits the time of his betrayal, crucifixion and death.\u00a0\u00a0I appreciate how real and transparent Jesus is as a leader about his feelings and his struggles.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 12:51-53 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.<br \/>\n<sup>52\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.<br \/>\n<sup>53\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 51-53:\u00a0\u00a0It is true that knowing Jesus brings us \u201ca peace that transcends understanding\u201d (Philippians 4:7) and a peace that the world cannot give (John 14:27).\u00a0\u00a0But it is also true that people, even family members, can be divided because of faith in Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0When that happens, it is a test of faith for the Christian.\u00a0\u00a0If that ever happens to you and family members oppose you because of your faith, keep hanging onto Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t give up.\u00a0\u00a0Trust God that He will make all things beautiful in His time and will save not just you but your family members one day too.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Luke 12:54-56 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>54\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He said to the crowd: &#8220;When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, &#8216;It&#8217;s going to rain,&#8217; and it does.<br \/>\n<sup>55\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And when the south wind blows, you say, &#8216;It&#8217;s going to be hot,&#8217; and it is.<br \/>\n<sup>56\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don&#8217;t know how to interpret this present time?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 54-56:\u00a0\u00a0Throughout Jesus\u2019 life and ministry so many signs were pointing to the fact that Jesus was the Messiah whom the Hebrew Scriptures had been prophesying about and whom the Jews had been waiting for.\u00a0\u00a0Reaching this conclusion should have been like simple meteorology. Yet many still did not clue in to the fact that Jesus is the Messiah, so Jesus rebukes the crowd of thousands for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Luke 12:57-59 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>57\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Why don&#8217;t you judge for yourselves what is right?<br \/>\n<sup>58\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.<br \/>\n<sup>59\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 57-59:\u00a0\u00a0Here I believe Jesus is referring to his conversation with the man in the crowd in verses 13-15 who asked Jesus to help him resolve his legal dispute with his brother.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus gives the crowd some practical advice: when you are dealing with legal issues, and especially matters where you risk being severely punished, do your best (\u201ctry hard\u201d &#8211;
