Instead, Jesus simply tells them to go show themselves to the priests. Why? It’s because when a leper was cleansed of his leprosy, he would show himself to a priest who would examine him and if satisfied that the leprosy was gone, would announce that the leper was now reinstated back into society. So when Jesus tells the ten lepers here to go and show themselves to the priests without having touched them or prayed for them, Jesus was expecting these ten lepers to go in faith and rely simply on Jesus’ word alone to heal them. And as they went, they were healed.

What can we learn from this? Faith is the key that unlocks God’s wonder working power in our lives – not just faith in anything or anyone, but specifically faith in the word God speaks to us. Faith is spelled R-I-S-K. Faith is taking Jesus at His Word and not requiring that you have complete understanding before you move forward with Him. If you insist on receiving a miracle before you exercise any faith, you won’t experience much of God at all. For God loves to work His miracles in the context of faith.

Luke 17:15-16 (NIV)
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.
16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him–and he was a Samaritan.

On verses 15-16: One of the ongoing themes in Luke is that Jesus came not just for the Jewish people but for all people, even groups that the Jews historically despised. We see that theme here again as a Samaritan is the only one who comes back to thank Jesus for the healing he received.

Luke 17:17-19 (NIV)
17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? God watches the way we respond to His goodness in our lives. Will we respond to God with gratitude and praise, or will we respond with spoiled indifference?

2. Once again we see that faith is the key that unlocks God’s wonder working power (“Rise and go; your faith has made you well” – v19).

Heavenly Father, thank You for all the ways You have been so good to me.
