Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them&#8211;to the Israelites.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates&#8211;all the Hittite country&#8211;to the Great Sea on the west.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-5:\u00a0\u00a0The book of Joshua begins with God giving Joshua the charge to get ready to cross the Jordan with his people into the land of Canaan.\u00a0God gives Joshua an encouraging vision of what the future would be for him and his nation (v3-4).\u00a0\u00a0God also gives Joshua His promise that He will always be with Joshua (v5) and will give Joshua success (v3).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God is a God of vision, purpose and destiny.<\/strong>\u00a0 When God speaks to you, He speaks with a vision and a plan to bless and use your life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God is an encourager.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>When God speaks to you, His goal is to build you up into the person He made you to be and to encourage you to do great things.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God chooses and uses individuals\u00a0<\/strong>to help His people step into their God-given purpose and destiny.\u00a0 God accomplishes His purposes through people who are willing to be used by Him.\u00a0 Like Joshua, you also have been chosen by God to be used for God&#8217;s purposes.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Joshua 1:6-9 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God will be with you wherever you go.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 6-9:\u00a0\u00a0Three times in four verses God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous (v6, v7 and v9).\u00a0\u00a0A big reason God gives Joshua for being strong and courageous is because God would be with them wherever they go (v9).\u00a0\u00a0Jesus would say something similar to his disciples when he gives them the great commission to make disciples of all nations.\u00a0\u00a0He tells them, \u201cSurely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.\u201d (Matthew 28:20b)\u00a0As a follower of Jesus you too are called by God, so verse 9 is worth memorizing and applying to your own life.<\/p>\n<p>God also tells Joshua to meditate on God\u2019s Word day and night so that he may be careful to obey it, and in turn prosper (v7-8).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<strong>God gives us His Word for our success.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0When we meditate on God\u2019s Word, we are more able to obey God\u2019s Word.\u00a0\u00a0When we obey God\u2019s Word, we will experience God\u2019s blessing and success.\u00a0\u00a0True success begins with meditating on God\u2019s Word.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0Courage is essential to effective leadership.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>You can\u2019t lead well without courage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>No matter what you are facing today, you can be strong and courageous, knowing that God is with you wherever you go (v9).\u00a0 The key to finding courage is to know that God is with you.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>As Pastor Rick Warren says, &#8220;We lose our fear when God is near.&#8221;\u00a0 Amen.
