Let this chapter be a reminder that until Jesus Christ came and reversed our fortunes, Hosea 4 was our destiny too. If it were not for Jesus, Hosea 4 is a perfect description of how God would see us today.

But praise God that Jesus came and changed everything. The punishment, the curses and the suffering we deserved for our sins – all of that Jesus took to the cross on our behalf. As Isaiah 53:5-6 says:
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Jesus traded our sin for His righteousness, our suffering for His peace, our shame for His glory.

So now when God sees you, He no longer sees a sinner, but a saint. He no longer sees someone who didn’t meet His standard, but someone who is completely holy and acceptable in His sight. That’s because the blood of Jesus covers all of our sin. The cross took the ultimate negative – our sin and separation from God — and turned it into the greatest positive. We were destined to be separated from God because of sin, yet through Jesus Christ God took our sins away and made us alive with Him again.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)
21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Heavenly Father, thank You that Your vision of me used to be as dark and hopeless as Hosea 4, but Your Son Jesus Christ changed all that. Because of His shed blood on the cross, I am righteous and blameless in Your sight, destined not for destruction but for glory, made not to serve meaningless idols anymore but to serve You the living God. Thank You! In Jesus’ name, AMEN!

Hosea 4:1-2 (NIV)
1 Hear the word of the LORD, you Israelites, because the LORD has a charge to bring against you who live in the land: “There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. 2 There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

Here in Hosea 4 Joel describes the way God saw the people of Israel and their priests — as nothing but sinners (v1-2), given to unfaithfulness and idolatry (v12-13, v17), hurt and hurting one another, lovers of evil (v18), unsatisfied (v10), stubborn (v16), stumbling (v5), rejected by God (v6), and wasting away (v3).
