Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s passage is John 5:1-9.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n

John 5:1-3 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>
\n1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews.
\n2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Here a great number of disabled people used to lie–the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 1-3:\u00a0\u00a0John\u2019s Gospel now shifts to Jesus in Jerusalem where he visits the pool of Bethesda where disabled people were known to congregate.\u00a0\u00a0Apparently some people believed that an angel stirred the waters of the pool of Bethesda and that the first person to enter the pool after the waters were stirred would be healed.<\/p>\n

By the way, why is verse 4 missing?\u00a0\u00a0If you read the King James version of John\u2019s Gospel, you will see verses 3b and 4 which mention this idea of an angel coming to stir the pool waters.\u00a0\u00a0However, this was apparently a later addition into Scripture and has been omitted from more current versions of the Gospel of John.<\/p>\n

John 5:5-6 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong>
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 5-6:\u00a0\u00a0Why did Jesus ask the disabled man, \u201cDo you want to get well?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Isn\u2019t the answer an obvious yes?\u00a0\u00a0Keep this in mind: whenever Jesus asks you a question, it\u2019s not for his benefit; it\u2019s for yours.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus asked this question because he realized that some people can get so used to living with their problem or weakness that they rely on it like a crutch, as an excuse not to move forward.\u00a0\u00a0It goes to show that\u00a0part of recovery is wanting to get well.\u00a0\u00a0If a person does not want to get well, it almost doesn\u2019t matter what others around them do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

John 5:7 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong>
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse 7:\u00a0\u00a0Notice that the disabled man does not answer Jesus\u2019 question directly.\u00a0\u00a0Rather, he blames his predicament on others, saying that there is no one to help him into the water.\u00a0\u00a0He\u2019s throwing a bit of a pity party.<\/p>\n

John 5:8-9 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong>
\n8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”<\/em>
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 8-9:\u00a0\u00a0Jesus does not try to argue with him or lecture him on his attitude.\u00a0\u00a0Rather, Jesus just tells the man to get up, pick up his mat and walk.\u00a0\u00a0The man obeys Jesus\u2019 word and is cured at once.\u00a0\u00a0What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jesus has the power to heal.\u00a0\u00a0When we take him at his word, we experience his power.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Notice that everything Jesus says to this man here is a command to do something: get up.\u00a0\u00a0Pick up your mat.\u00a0\u00a0Walk.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s as if Jesus knew that this man\u2019s problem was as much his passivity as his disability.\u00a0\u00a0In conquering his disability, the man first had to conquer his passivity.\u00a0\u00a0What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0Your ability to experience a breakthrough depends a lot on your attitude.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus, thank You for showing me today that my attitude toward my problem is key to my ability to conquer it.\u00a0\u00a0May I not passively blame You, blame others or play the victim.\u00a0\u00a0Instead, may I have a proactive attitude toward my situation, knowing that my attitude will affect my ability to break through.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
