The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 16-17:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>To help us love and obey Jesus, Jesus and the Father together give us access to the Holy Spirit, the third Person in the Trinity.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Here Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as \u201cthe Spirit of truth\u201d (v17).\u00a0\u00a0He also calls the Holy Spirit a \u201cCounselor\u201d (v16), in Greek \u201cparakletos\u201d, which in other English translations has also been translated \u201ccomforter\u201d, \u201cadvocate\u201d, and \u201chelper\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0Indeed the Holy Spirit is all of those things to Christians.\u00a0The Holy Spirit counsels Christians to understand and do God\u2019s will.\u00a0\u00a0The Holy Spirit comforts Christians with the presence of God.\u00a0\u00a0The Holy Spirit is our advocate who speaks to the Father on our behalf.\u00a0\u00a0And the Holy Spirit is our helper, who empowers us to do what God wants us to do.<\/p>\n<p>In verse 17, Jesus teaches us other important truths about the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>First,\u00a0<strong>those who do not believe in Jesus will have a tough time understanding or experiencing much of the Holy Spirit<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0As Jesus says, \u201cThe world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him\u201d (v17a).<\/p>\n<p>Second,\u00a0<strong>the Holy Spirit is made available to people who have trusted in Jesus Christ<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0When you place your faith in Jesus, mysteriously and amazingly the Holy Spirit \u201clives with you and will be in you\u201d (v17b).\u00a0\u00a0Your body becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).\u00a0\u00a0That doesn\u2019t mean that you become God.\u00a0\u00a0Rather, it means that now you have a special relationship with God because His Spirit lives inside you.\u00a0\u00a0This holy resident inside you called the Holy Spirit gives you a peace that passes understanding, helps you to understand God\u2019s Word, convicts us of sin, helps us experience more of God\u2019s presence, and does so much more.\u00a0\u00a0How good and precious it is to know the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>John 14:18-20 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 18-20:\u00a0\u00a0Jesus was preparing his disciples for a time when \u201cthe world will not see [Jesus]\u2026anymore\u201d (v19).\u00a0\u00a0At the same time Jesus is also promising that he won\u2019t leave his disciples as orphans but that He would come to them (v18) and his disciples will see him (v19).\u00a0\u00a0At that time, Jesus\u2019 disciples would realize that Jesus truly is in the Father, that they are in Jesus and Jesus is in them (v20).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What time in history is Jesus referring to in these verses?\u00a0\u00a0Some scholars think Jesus is referring to his resurrection, and that may be possible.\u00a0\u00a0Given that Jesus has just finished speaking about the Holy Spirit, I think Jesus is perhaps more likely referring to Pentecost in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit would be poured out upon all believers in Jesus after Jesus had already ascended to heaven.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>John 14:21 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.
