{"id":15380,"date":"2021-04-21T22:00:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T05:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/genesis_4_1-12-copy\/"},"modified":"2021-04-18T22:07:08","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T05:07:08","slug":"genesis_4_13-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/genesis_4_13-26\/","title":{"rendered":"Marked By God For Protection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Genesis 4:13-26 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+4%3A13-26&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/21-0423.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/21-0423.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/21-0423-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Genesis 4:13-26.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 4:13-15 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Cain said to the\u00a0LORD, &#8220;My punishment is more than I can bear.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But the\u00a0LORD\u00a0said to him, &#8220;Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over.&#8221; Then the\u00a0LORD\u00a0put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 13-15: Realizing that the punishment for his sin is that he will be hidden from God\u2019s presence and vulnerable to attack, Cain cries out to God.\u00a0\u00a0Was Cain asking for forgiveness or just complaining about his punishment?\u00a0\u00a0While some commentators think Cain was asking for forgiveness, it would seem to me based on the text probably the latter.\u00a0\u00a0Yet God has mercy on Cain, placing a mark on him so that no one would kill him (v15).<\/p>\n<p>The image of God marking Cain to protect him reminds me of Ephesians 1:13, where Paul says to the Christians in Ephesus, \u201c[h]aving believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit\u201d (Ephesians 1:13).\u00a0\u00a0When we believe, we are marked by the Holy Spirit and the blood of Jesus, which protects us from the ultimate punishment for our sin, being separation from God.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 4:16 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So Cain went out from the\u00a0LORD&#8217;s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 16:\u00a0\u00a0\u201cNod\u201d literally means wandering.\u00a0\u00a0Like Cain, we can either live in God\u2019s presence where we find peace and purpose or we will find ourselves lost in the land of wandering.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 4:17a (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 17a:\u00a0\u00a0If Adam and Eve were the first and only human beings and gave birth to Cain and Abel, where did Cain\u2019s wife come from?\u00a0\u00a0Many scholars respond that Adam and Eve, given their long life span, probably had other children and that Cain\u2019s wife was one of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 4:17b-24 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0 \u2026Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0His brother&#8217;s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.<br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain&#8217;s sister was Naamah.<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Lamech said to his wives, &#8220;Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.<br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 17b-24:\u00a0\u00a0The rest of verse 17 describes Cain building a city, naming it after his son Enoch, while verses 18-22 describe the descendants of Cain. Lamech, one of Cain\u2019s descendants, boasts about having killed a man who had merely wounded him (v23-24).\u00a0\u00a0The vengeance that Cain showed we see being re-enacted here in Cain\u2019s future generations.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a reminder that we want to get rid of malice, vengeance and anger from our own lives, lest we end up hurting others, including affecting future generations after us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 4:25 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, &#8220;God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
