{"id":15577,"date":"2021-05-03T22:00:09","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T05:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/genesis_9_8-19-copy\/"},"modified":"2021-05-02T21:04:25","modified_gmt":"2021-05-03T04:04:25","slug":"genesis_10_1-32","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/genesis_10_1-32\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ones Who Come After"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Genesis 10:1-32\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+10%3A1-32&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15579 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/21-0504.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/21-0504.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/21-0504-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Genesis 10:1-32.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 10:1-5 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah&#8217;s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah.<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim and the Rodanim.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0(From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-5:\u00a0\u00a0Here the author of Genesis lists the descendants of Noah, starting with the descendants of Noah\u2019s second son Japheth (v2-5).\u00a0\u00a0There is a reason why the author of Genesis starts with the second son.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s because the descendants of Noah\u2019s oldest son Shem would be highlighted last to lead into the story of Shem\u2019s most famous descendants: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and of course Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0The fact that the various peoples that emerged from Japheth\u2019s line each had their own language (v5) suggests that God loves a variety of languages and cultures.\u00a0\u00a0God is a God who enjoys ethnic and cultural diversity.\u00a0\u00a0We will see this all the more in chapter 11.\u00a0\u00a0That is why in Revelation heaven is described as a kingdom of people from every nation.\u00a0\u00a0This also sets us up for a tragedy we will read about in Genesis 11.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 10:6-7 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 6-7:\u00a0\u00a0Here the author of Genesis focuses on a selective list of Ham\u2019s descendants.\u00a0\u00a0In the verses that follow the author of Genesis pays special attention to one famous descendant of Ham called Nimrod.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 10:8-12 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He was a mighty hunter before the\u00a0LORD; that is why it is said, &#8220;Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the\u00a0LORD.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in Shinar.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 8-12:\u00a0\u00a0Not much is known about Nimrod.\u00a0\u00a0Here we see that Nimrod was a descendant of Noah\u2019s disgraced son Ham.\u00a0\u00a0The fact that a number of cities Nimrod built became famous enemies of Israel, such as Babylon (v10) and Assyria (v11), has led some scholars to believe that Nimrod, whose name means \u201crebel\u201d, opposed God and was a powerful, charismatic leader who led people to turn away from God, almost like an Old Testament anti-Christ.\u00a0\u00a0It is interesting that \u201cNimrod\u201d is now more commonly used as an insult, referring to a stupid person.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 10:13-20 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites,<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Pathrusites, Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites.<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites,<br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,<br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,<br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 13-20:\u00a0\u00a0These verses conclude the list of Ham\u2019s descendants and especially highlights Canaan, from whom many different peoples and nations would be born.\u00a0\u00a0It is interesting that Ham, who is best known for his disrespectful act toward his father, would become the father of famous places like Sidon (v15), Sodom (v19), and Gomorrah (v19) which would become the enemies of Israel and would later be destroyed because of God\u2019s wrath against sin.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 10:21-31 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.<br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshech.<br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber.<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,<br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Obal, Abimael, Sheba,<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.<br \/>\n<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 21-31:\u00a0\u00a0Here we read a summary of the first descendants of Shem.\u00a0\u00a0Shem\u2019s family line is especially significant in Genesis, for it is from Shem that Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the nation of Israel would be born, as we will see in the coming chapters.\u00a0\u00a0Since all of who have trusted in Jesus Christ are at least spiritually related to the likes of Abraham and Jesus, you could almost say that Seth\u2019s line is our family tree as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 10:32 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These are the clans of Noah&#8217;s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations.
