{"id":15824,"date":"2021-05-21T22:00:41","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T05:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/genesis_19_12-22-copy\/"},"modified":"2021-05-16T18:02:17","modified_gmt":"2021-05-17T01:02:17","slug":"genesis_19_23-38","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/genesis_19_23-38\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Conform But Be Transformed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Genesis 19:23-38\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+19%3A23-38&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15826 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/21-0522.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/21-0522.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/21-0522-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Genesis 19:23-38.\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Genesis 19:23-28 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land.<br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then the\u00a0LORD\u00a0rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah&#8211;from the\u00a0LORD\u00a0out of the heavens.<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities&#8211;and also the vegetation in the land.<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But Lot&#8217;s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the\u00a0LORD.<br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 23-28:\u00a0\u00a0God\u2019s wrath against sin is real.\u00a0\u00a0It is only by God\u2019s mercy and grace expressed through Jesus Christ on the cross that we have hope and protection against God\u2019s wrath.\u00a0\u00a0When Jesus first came to as a suffering servant to die for our sins.\u00a0\u00a0The next time Jesus comes, He will not come as a suffering servant but as a righteous judge and conquering king.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, in Luke 17, when Jesus describes his second coming, he compares it to the way God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah:<\/p>\n<p><em><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0&#8220;It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.<br \/>\n<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.<br \/>\n<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Remember Lot&#8217;s wife!<br \/>\n<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Lot\u2019s wife, what exactly happened to her?\u00a0\u00a0Earlier in verse 17, the angels told Lot, Lot\u2019s wife and their family not to look back as they flee from Sodom. In verse 26, however, Lot\u2019s wife looks back and becomes a pillar (or perhaps a statue) of salt.\u00a0\u00a0What happened exactly?\u00a0\u00a0What did that look like?\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t know exactly, but in any event it is a powerful lesson that\u00a0<strong>living in the past paralyzes us and keeps us from moving forward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 19:29 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 29:\u00a0\u00a0God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, but in remembrance of Abraham, God brought Lot, the relative of Abraham, out of Sodom unscathed.\u00a0\u00a0Likewise, we deserved to perish for our sin, but God, remembering His Son Jesus Christ on the cross, spares all of us who are connected to Jesus by faith and brings us to the safe place.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Genesis 19:30 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 30:\u00a0\u00a0Too afraid to stay in Zoar, Lot hid with his two daughters in the mountains.\u00a0\u00a0By living in seclusion this way, Lot prevented his daughters from having much prospect of finding husbands.\u00a0\u00a0Previously Lot was quick to give his daughters away as sex objects for the men of Sodom.\u00a0\u00a0Now here Lot is slow to give his daughters away as legitimate wives.\u00a0\u00a0As a result his daughters feel compelled to do something about it.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<strong>When we live in fear, not only do we suffer, but those who depend on our leadership suffer as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong>We are to take good care of those whom God has entrusted to us, especially our immediate family.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0See 1 Timothy 5:8.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Genesis 19:31-36 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0One day the older daughter said to the younger, &#8220;Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth.<br \/>\n<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Let&#8217;s get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.<br \/>\n<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The next day the older daughter said to the younger, &#8220;Last night I lay with my father. Let&#8217;s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So both of Lot&#8217;s daughters became pregnant by their father.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 31-36:\u00a0\u00a0Worried at the possibility of never marrying and having children, Lot\u2019s two daughters decide to take matters into their own hands.\u00a0\u00a0They get their father drunk and sleep with him.\u00a0\u00a0Their incestuous affairs with their father result in both of them getting pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>The shocking way in which Lot\u2019s daughters took matters in their own hands is similar to the other shocking proposals we heard from the men of Sodom (v5) as well as from Lot himself (v8).\u00a0\u00a0Evidently the warped value system of Sodom was still very much alive in Lot\u2019s daughters.\u00a0\u00a0It goes to show that you can get the people out of Sodom, but can you get Sodom out of the people?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many Christians today live like Lot\u2019s daughters: by God\u2019s grace they have been rescued and taken out of a place that was destined to be destroyed by God\u2019s wrath, but they still think and live in the ways of the place they came out of.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0That is why it is so crucial that after you have said yes to Jesus and allowed Him to save you and forgive you of your sins, don\u2019t stop there.\u00a0\u00a0You also need to allow God\u2019s Word and God\u2019s Spirit to begin sanctifying you, that is, transforming you from the inside out so that you become more and more like Jesus in the way you think and live.\u00a0\u00a0As Romans 12:2 says, \u201cDo not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0As Colossians 3:7-10 says:<\/p>\n<p><em><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.\u00a0<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Verses 31-36 are also a lesson in the dangers of getting drunk and abusing intoxicating or addictive substances.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Getting drunk on wine or other substances leads to us living, talking and deciding in foolish ways that we will regret later.\u00a0\u00a0As Ephesians 5:18 says, \u201cDo not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.
