{"id":18799,"date":"2021-11-28T22:00:55","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T05:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/titus-1_1-9-copy\/"},"modified":"2021-11-23T17:50:45","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T00:50:45","slug":"titus-1_10-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/titus-1_10-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect the Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Titus 1:10-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Titus+1%3A10-16&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18802 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/21-1129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/21-1129.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/21-1129-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is\u00a0Titus\u00a01:10-16.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Titus<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>1<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>10<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>-11 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>10<\/sup><\/em><em><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach&#8211;and that for the sake of dishonest gain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a010-11: Paul warns\u00a0Titus\u00a0to guard against those who try to deceive the church in Crete with false doctrine.\u00a0 In particular, Paul warns\u00a0Titus\u00a0about the \u201ccircumcision group\u201d (also known as the Judaizers) who taught that in order to be saved it was not enough to believe in Jesus but that you must also be circumcised and follow the ceremonial and food regulations of the Jewish law.\u00a0 \u00a0Paul warns\u00a0Titus\u00a0sternly about them.\u00a0 He tells\u00a0Titus\u00a0to speak for the truth and silence those false teachers.\u00a0 It\u2019s no wonder that when picking leaders, Paul especially emphasized that a leader must \u201chold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refuse those who oppose it\u201d (v9).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0 If you are a parent in your home, a leader in your small group, a teacher in your classroom, or in some other leadership position where people look to you for leadership, you must remember that part of your role is that of a protector.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>You are to protect those in your care from believing in lies and false doctrine.\u00a0 Don\u2019t remain silent but be sure to speak up on issues of truth so that those in your care can know right from wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Titus<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>1<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:12-14 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0Even one of their own prophets has said, &#8220;Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 12-14:\u00a0 Here Paul quotes a famous poet from Crete called Epimenides who wrote a negative assessment of the character of his own people from Crete, calling them liars, brutes, lazy and gluttonous.\u00a0 Apparently, Epimenides was not the only one, as the Greek word for lying or cheating was \u201cto cretize\u201d, based on the name Crete.\u00a0 So Paul tells\u00a0Titus\u00a0to give appropriate rebuke whenever people in his church in Crete would begin to allow false doctrine to poison their faith.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Part of maturing as a Christian is becoming increasingly able to identify the lies of the enemy.\u00a0 This is called having spiritual discernment.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0May you be able to identify when the enemy is trying to convince you of ideas that run contrary to the Word of God, so that you can rebuke the enemy, silence his voice and be sound in your faith.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Titus<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>1<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:15-16 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 15-16:\u00a0 Along with teaching that a person must be circumcised in order to be saved, the circumcision group that Paul refers to in verse\u00a010\u00a0also taught that you need to observe various food and ceremonial rules in order to be clean and righteous in God\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Paul responds by saying, \u201cto the pure, all things are pure\u201d (v15).\u00a0 Who are \u201cthe pure\u201d Paul is referring to?\u00a0 The \u201cpure\u201d are those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0 In other words, if you have placed your faith in Jesus, you have been forgiven of your sins, purified from all unrighteousness (1\u00a0John\u00a01:9) and you don\u2019t have to worry about certain foods or dirt defiling you (see, for example, Matthew\u00a015:11).\u00a0\u00a0 While those who trust in Christ are pure, Paul says that the circumcision group\u2019s teaching about how you need to wash yourself, abstain from certain foods and get circumcised in order to be spiritually clean is wrong.\u00a0 He calls such teaching \u201ccorrupted\u201d (a word he uses twice in verse 15) and contradictory (v16).\u00a0 Paul says that while the circumcision group claims to know God, they show by their actions and their teaching that they have no idea who God is, are clueless about how people are really saved, and are disobeying God by spreading their teachings.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Do not get duped into thinking that by your own effort and goodness you can make yourself spiritually clean.\u00a0 It is only through Jesus Christ\u2019s finished work on the cross that we can be made pure and enter God\u2019s holy presence.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Praise God that while we were unable to clean ourselves of sin, Jesus came to take our sins away, purify us and make us acceptable in the Father\u2019s sight again.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heavenly Father, thank You for being a Protector of the truth.\u00a0 In all the areas where You have given me influence and authority \u2013 whether in my home, with those in my care, or in my own private thoughts \u2013 may I be a protector of truth as well.\u00a0 Thank You so much that because of Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross for me, I am made completely pure
