Then bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Place the gold altar of incense in front of the ark of the Testimony and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Place the altar of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting;<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0place the basin between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Set up the courtyard around it and put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate the altar, and it will be most holy.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-11:\u00a0 This past Sunday at THRIVE Church Online we looked at this passage together.\u00a0 In a message called \u201cHe\u2019s There For You: Finding Jesus in Exodus\u201d, I tried to show you that the seven \u201cI am\u201d statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John are reflected in Exodus 40:4-9 in the exact order that they appear in the Gospel of John.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>Verse from<br \/>\nExodus 40<\/em><\/td>\n<td><em>\u201cI Am\u201d Statement from Jesus<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Bring in the table and set out\u00a0<u>what belongs on it<\/u>\u2026<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the bread of life.\u201d (John 6:35)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0\u2026Then bring in\u00a0<u>the lampstand<\/u>\u00a0and set up\u00a0<u>its lamps<\/u>.<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the light of the world.\u201d (John 8:12)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0\u2026put\u00a0<u>the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle<\/u>.<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the gate\u201d (John 10:9)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Place\u00a0<u>the altar of burnt offering<\/u>\u00a0in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting;<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the good shepherd.\u201d (John 10:11)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0place\u00a0<u>the basin<\/u>\u00a0between the Tent of Meeting and the altar and put water in it.<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the resurrection and the life.\u201d (John 11:25-26)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Set up the courtyard around it and put\u00a0<u>the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard<\/u>.<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the way, the truth and the life.\u00a0 No one comes to the Father except through Me.\u201d (John 14:6)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Take\u00a0<u>the anointing oil<\/u>\u00a0and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy.<\/td>\n<td><strong>\u201cI am the vine\u201d (John 15:5)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Now perhaps you are wondering about some other parts of the tabernacle and what they represent.<\/p>\n<p>The ark in verse 3 points to Jesus Christ Himself.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Just as the ark was a physical representation of the presence of God, so Jesus is the physical embodiment of the presence of God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>As Colossians 2:9 says, &#8220;in Christ all the fullness of God lives in bodily form\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Just as the ark contained the two tablets showing God\u2019s Ten Commandments, so Jesus is the physical embodiment of the Word of God<\/strong>\u00a0(John 1:1,14).<\/p>\n<p>What about the curtain that shields the ark in verse 3?\u00a0 Hebrews 10:19-20 already tells us that the curtain is a picture of Jesus\u2019 body. On the day that Jesus died, the curtain in the temple was torn, symbolizing that now it was possible access to God\u2019s holy presence.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Just as the curtain was torn, so Jesus\u2019 body was torn to make access to God\u2019s presence possible for all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What about the golden altar of incense in verse 5?\u00a0 This altar was where the priests would burn incense, such that the smoke of that incense would rise and go past the curtain and fill the Most Holy Place.\u00a0 This altar of incense corresponds with Jesus\u2019 high priestly prayer in John 17, which is the longest prayer of Jesus recorded in Scripture.\u00a0 It is called his \u201cpriestly prayer\u201d because he was standing in the gap on behalf of his disciples and even us, those who would believe in Him in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thus every piece of furniture in Exodus 40:4-9 finds a significant connection to Jesus in the Gospel of John.<\/strong>\u00a0 Aren\u2019t these connections amazing?\u00a0 Did Moses know about this when he was writing Exodus 40?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 Did John know about this when he was writing the Gospel of John 1600 years later?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>It\u2019s as if God took a banner and put one end of it in Moses\u2019 hand, and then God stretched that banner across 1600 years and put the other end of the banner in John\u2019s hand, and when you read it the banner says one name: Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s yet one more reason to be in awe of God and to call the Bible the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Exodus 40:12-16 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments, anoint him and consecrate him so he may serve me as priest.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Bring his sons and dress them in tunics.<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests.
