{"id":20938,"date":"2022-04-04T22:00:01","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T05:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts_10_1-16-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-04-05T11:52:21","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T18:52:21","slug":"acts_10_17-33","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts_10_17-33\/","title":{"rendered":"Obey Without Delay"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Acts 10:17-33\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+10%3A17-33&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20940 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/22-0405.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/22-0405.png 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/22-0405-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Acts 10:17-33.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 10:17-19 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon&#8217;s house was and stopped at the gate.<br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, &#8220;Simon, three men are looking for you.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 17-19:\u00a0 In verse 3 the Holy Spirit called Cornelius by name.\u00a0 A number of times in Acts 10 the Holy Spirit calls Peter by name.\u00a0 (In fact, the Holy Spirit calls him by his new name \u201cPeter\u201d in verse 13 and then calls him by his old name \u201cSimon\u201d in verse 19.)\u00a0 What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God is a personal loving Father who knows us and calls by name.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 10:20-24 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Peter went down and said to the men, &#8220;I&#8217;m the one you&#8217;re looking for. Why have you come?&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The men replied, &#8220;We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along.<br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 20-24:\u00a0 Cornelius was so confident that his messengers would find Peter just as God had told him that Cornelius called his relatives and close friends to come over and expect Peter to arrive.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Faith is expectant.\u00a0 In other words, people of faith believe what God says and trust that when they follow what God says good things are going to happen.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Like Cornelius, we need to be people of faith if we want to see God move in our lives, for\u00a0<strong>God loves to work in an atmosphere of expectant faith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 10:25-26 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But Peter made him get up. &#8220;Stand up,&#8221; he said, &#8220;I am only a man myself.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 25-26:\u00a0 A pattern in the book of Acts is that people are inclined to bow in reverence before Peter, Peter stops them and points them to Jesus Christ as the one they should revere (see for example Acts 3:12).\u00a0 May we do the same whenever people are inclined to make a big deal out of us.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Point them back to who the great one truly is: Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 10:27-29 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.<br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He said to them: &#8220;You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 27-29:\u00a0 All his life Peter was used to not associating with non-Jewish people (Gentiles), being taught that Gentiles were impure or unclean.\u00a0 But earlier in Acts 10 God personally challenges Peter on this point and Peter willingly changes his mind, saying \u201cBut God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.\u201d (v28)\u00a0 Peter\u2019s repentance (his decision to turn from his old ways and go God\u2019s way) was backed up by action, as Peter goes with Cornelius\u2019 messengers \u201cwithout raising any objection\u201d (v29) and without knowing why he was being sent for.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Be quick to obey God after you hear from Him.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Notice that though Peter and Cornelius came from two totally backgrounds, they shared a common characteristic:\u00a0 they were quick to obey once they heard from God.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s no wonder that they were the ones God chose to bring about a watershed moment in the church and the revelation that Jesus Christ truly is for every person on the planet regardless of their ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 10:30-33 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Cornelius answered: &#8220;Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me<br \/>\n<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and said, &#8216;Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.<br \/>\n<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.&#8217;<br \/>\n<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come.
