{"id":21534,"date":"2022-05-10T22:00:03","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T05:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts_22_1-16-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-05-03T20:27:41","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T03:27:41","slug":"acts_22_17-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts_22_17-30\/","title":{"rendered":"When Your Citizenship Can Save You"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Acts\u00a0 22:17-30\u00a0 \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+22%3A17-30&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21536 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/22-0511.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/22-0511.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/22-0511-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi\u00a0 GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Acts 22:17-30.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 22:17-21 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance<br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and saw the Lord speaking. &#8216;Quick!&#8217; he said to me. &#8216;Leave Jerusalem immediately, because they will not accept your testimony about me.&#8217;<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;&#8216;Lord,&#8217; I replied, &#8216;these men know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you.<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.&#8217;<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Then the Lord said to me, &#8216;Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.'&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 17-21:\u00a0 In Paul\u2019s mind, it seemed to make so much sense for him, when he first became a Christian, to stay in Jerusalem, since he was well known in Jerusalem as the most zealous persecutor of Christians and now had become a Christian himself.\u00a0 But God had different plans for Paul. God knew that people were bent on killing Paul in Jerusalem, so God sends Paul far away to the Gentiles.\u00a0 It turns out that there was wisdom in God\u2019s plan after all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What makes so much sense to us is not always the best plan.\u00a0 God\u2019s ways are higher than our ways and sometimes God will direct us in ways that do not make sense to us, and our job is simply to trust and obey.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 22:22 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, &#8220;Rid the earth of him! He&#8217;s not fit to live!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 22:\u00a0 What was so offensive about Paul\u2019s testimony to the Jewish audience listening to him?\u00a0 According to the New American Commentary, Paul\u2019s mission to reach the Gentiles is what got Paul in trouble with his audience, which consisted of many pro-Israel nationalists who considered Paul to be turning his back on his Jewish heritage.\u00a0 (Polhill, John B.\u00a0<em>New American Commentary \u2013 Volume 26: Acts<\/em>. WORD<em>search<\/em>\u00a0CROSS e-book.)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 22:23-30 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air,<br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0the commander ordered Paul to be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and questioned in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this.<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, &#8220;Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn&#8217;t even been found guilty?&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. &#8220;What are you going to do?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;This man is a Roman citizen.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The commander went to Paul and asked, &#8220;Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?&#8221; &#8220;Yes, I am,&#8221; he answered.<br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then the commander said, &#8220;I had to pay a big price for my citizenship.&#8221; &#8220;But I was born a citizen,&#8221; Paul replied.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Those who were about to question him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The next day, since the commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble.
