{"id":21907,"date":"2022-06-10T22:00:09","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T05:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/deuteronomy_5_23-33-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-05-31T17:49:35","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T00:49:35","slug":"deuteronomy_6_1-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/deuteronomy_6_1-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Get It On Your Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Deuteronomy\u00a0 6:1-13 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+6%3A1-13&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21909 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/22-0611.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/22-0611.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/22-0611-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi\u00a0 GAMErs!<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"m_-7083819128915897480q_5\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-label=\"Hide expanded content\">\n<div>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Deuteronomy 6:1-13.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 6:1-3 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These are the commands, decrees and laws the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the\u00a0LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 1-3:\u00a0 Why did God direct Moses to teach this current generation of Israelites his commands?\u00a0 It\u2019s so that they and the generations after them would fear (i.e. reverence, trust, and honour) the Lord (v2) and so that they would enjoy long (i.e. a full) life.\u00a0 In other words, God\u2019s purpose for teaching His Word is not for entertainment or expanding one\u2019s knowledge.\u00a0 Rather,\u00a0<strong>God\u2019s purpose for teaching us His Word is to effect life change, that we would know God better and love Him more.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why does God tell the Israelites to obey His commands?\u00a0 It\u2019s not for the sake of controlling the Israelites, but \u201cso that it may go well with you\u201d and so \u201cthat you may increase greatly\u201d (v3).\u00a0 Again, a recurring theme in Deuteronomy is that\u00a0<strong>God gives us His commands for our success: so that it would go well with us and so that we would increase and grow in the most important ways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 6:4-5 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Hear, O Israel: The\u00a0LORD\u00a0our God, the\u00a0LORD\u00a0is one.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Love the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 4-5:\u00a0 When Jesus was asked to name God\u2019s greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-38), Jesus quoted verse 5: \u201cLove the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength\u201d.\u00a0 I think Moses might agree, for after reminding this current generation of Israelites of God\u2019s 10 Commandments (Deuteronomy 5), the next command Moses mentions is this one.\u00a0 Indeed there is nothing more important for us to do on this earth than to love God with all that we are.\u00a0 As Jesus says, \u201cfor this sums up the law and the prophets\u201d (Matthew 22:38).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 6-9:\u00a0\u00a0Moses tells the Israelites that God&#8217;s laws are &#8220;to be on their hearts&#8221; (v6).\u00a0\u00a0<strong>How do you get God&#8217;s Word on your heart?\u00a0 By giving attention to God&#8217;s Word as much as you can in as many places as you can.<\/strong>\u00a0 That&#8217;s why Moses tells the Israelites to think about and talk about God&#8217;s Word everywhere they go. For example:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;when you sit at home and when you walk along the road&#8221; (v7).\u00a0 That is, in your private life when you&#8217;re on your own (&#8220;at home&#8221;) and in your public life when you&#8217;re out with other people (&#8220;the road&#8221;), think about God&#8217;s Word.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;when you lie down and when you get up&#8221; (v7): at the end of every day and at the beginning of every day, think about God&#8217;s Word.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads&#8221; (v8): &#8220;Hands&#8221; represent the things we do; &#8220;foreheads&#8221; represent our thoughts.\u00a0 In all our doing and thinking, think about God&#8217;s Word.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Impress them on your children&#8221; (v7): The great benefit of teaching God&#8217;s Word is this: the more you teach God&#8217;s Word to those younger than you, the more God&#8217;s Word gets reinforced into your heart as well. \u00a0 So whether it&#8217;s in your home, in children&#8217;s ministry, sharing what you learned in a small group, sharing with someone younger in the faith than you,\u00a0or teaching a crowd, when we teach God&#8217;s Word, God&#8217;s Word gets in our heart as well.<\/p>\n<p>The more places, the more ways and the more you times you think about God&#8217;s Word, the more God&#8217;s Word will be on your heart and will influence your thoughts and decisions. \u00a0\u00a0<strong>We need to get into the Word of God until the Word of God gets into us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 6:10-11 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you&#8211;a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build,<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant&#8211;then when you eat and are satisfied,<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verses 10-11:\u00a0\u00a0In addition to describing the amazing land that God promised to the Israelites, verses 10-11 remind us of the amazing grace God has shown us through Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Just like he rescued the Israelites from a land of slavery in Egypt (v12), so He has rescued us from our slavery to sin.\u00a0 But we get to enjoy more than just forgiveness and salvation from sin.\u00a0 Through faith in Jesus Christ, we get to enjoy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;large, flourishing cities you did not build&#8221; (that&#8217;s like the capital C Church, God&#8217;s universal family of Christians that transcends all cultures, countries, languages, and nations, the most diverse family that will ever exist)<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide&#8221; (that&#8217;s like your local church)<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;wells you did not dig&#8221; (that&#8217;s like the Holy Spirit in us)<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant&#8221;
