{"id":22175,"date":"2022-06-26T22:00:21","date_gmt":"2022-06-27T05:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/deuteronomy_11_22-32-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-06-21T13:14:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T20:14:12","slug":"deuteronomy_12_1-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/deuteronomy_12_1-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Holy Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Deuteronomy 12:1-14 \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+12%3A1-14&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22177 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/22-0627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/22-0627.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/22-0627-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Deuteronomy 12:1-14.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 12:1-3 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the\u00a0LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess&#8211;as long as you live in the land.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains and on the hills and under every spreading tree where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-3: \u00a0Moses tells the Israelites that when they oust out the nations occupying the Promised Land, they are to completely destroy their altars and places of worship.\u00a0 This sounds harsh and is certainly not a politically correct statement in Western culture today. The lesson for us here is this: \u00a0we are to give God uncompromising worship.\u00a0 Later in the Old Testament, in 2 Kings 23, we read of King Josiah who does exactly what Deuteronomy 12:3 is talking about.\u00a0 With all the breaking, smashing and tearing down that Josiah does in 2 Kings 23, you\u2019d think that Josiah was a playable character in a Super Mario Bros. video game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are we to apply verse 3 to our lives today?<\/strong>\u00a0 Does that mean we are to act like terrorists and destroy every religious monument in our city that does not honour Jesus?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Remember that ancient Israel was a theocratic nation where the laws of the land informed the faith of the people and vice versa.\u00a0 Living in a secular society, we are to abide by the laws of the land, treat those who ascribe to a different faith with respect, and do our best to win them over not through violence and destruction but through loving relationship, humble service, prayer and intelligent dialogue, just as Jesus did.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to our own personal lives, applying Deuteronomy 12:3 means having a take-no-prisoners approach toward destroying idols in our own lives.\u00a0 We need to be careful not to worship anything other than God Himself.\u00a0 For if we try to protect and maintain idols in our lives, they will end up being our downfall.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 12:4-14 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You must not worship the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God in their way.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But you are to seek the place the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. To that place you must go;<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, what you have vowed to give and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0There, in the presence of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God has blessed you.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You are not to do as we do here today, everyone as he sees fit,<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0since you have not yet reached the resting place and the inheritance the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God is giving you.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Then to the place the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name&#8211;there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the\u00a0LORD.<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And there rejoice before the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God, you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levites from your towns, who have no allotment or inheritance of their own.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings anywhere you please.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Offer them only at the place the\u00a0LORD\u00a0will choose in one of your tribes, and there observe everything I command you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 4-14: \u00a0Moses tells the Israelites to &#8220;seek\u00a0<em>the place<\/em>\u00a0the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put His name there for His dwelling&#8221; (v5).\u00a0 Again in verse 11 Moses emphasizes that place, telling the Israelites to bring their offerings and sacrifices \u201c<em>to the place<\/em>\u00a0the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name\u201d.\u00a0 What is that \u201cplace\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>In the New Testament, we know that\u00a0<strong>ultimately the place which God has chosen as a dwelling place for His name is you and me<\/strong>.\u00a0 When we trust that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose again from the grave, the Bible says that God sends His Holy Spirit to live in all of us who place our faith in Jesus.
