{"id":22261,"date":"2022-07-06T22:00:35","date_gmt":"2022-07-07T05:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/deuteronomy_16_13-22-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-06-28T17:06:11","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T00:06:11","slug":"deuteronomy_17_1-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/deuteronomy_17_1-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Be Quick to Throw Stones, But Be Quick to Learn and Understand"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Deuteronomy 17:1-13 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+17%3A1-13&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22263 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/22-0707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/22-0707.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/22-0707-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Deuteronomy 17:1-13.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 17:1 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do not sacrifice to the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse\u00a01: \u00a0God alone is perfect and worthy of the perfect offering.\u00a0 Praise God that when we were unable to give God the perfect sacrifice because of our sin, God sent His Son &#8212; without flaw or defect &#8212; to be the perfect sacrifice for us.<\/p>\n<p>Now that God has given us His best in Jesus Christ, let&#8217;s give Him our best as well.\u00a0 Whenever you serve or offer God anything, don&#8217;t give God the scraps or the leftovers.\u00a0 Give Him your best.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God made you and saved you so that you could give your best to Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 17:2-7 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the\u00a0LORD\u00a0gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God in violation of his covenant,<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky,<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put to death, but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 2-7: \u00a0Moses tells the Israelites that when anyone is accused of worshiping an idol, they are to investigate the matter thoroughly and not stone the person except on the testimony of at least two or three reliable witnesses.\u00a0 To discourage people from acting as false witnesses, it is the witnesses who are to throw the first stone.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0 Two lessons:<\/p>\n<p>(1) It shows that God looks very seriously at idolatry.\u00a0 When we worship anything other than God, the penalty we deserve for our idolatry is death.\u00a0 All of heaven can bear witness to our idolatry, but praise God that Jesus Christ came and died in our place.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The cross is proof that while God&#8217;s wrath against idolatry is great, His love for us is even greater.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0<strong>Don&#8217;t be quick to throw stones at others.<\/strong>\u00a0 When you think someone has wronged you or wronged others, \u201cinvestigate the matter thoroughly\u201d, as verse 4 says, and make sure you understand the situation before you try to accuse others or condemn them with your words.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Deuteronomy 17:8-13 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge&#8211;whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults&#8211;take them to the place the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God will choose.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Go to the priests, who are Levites, and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the\u00a0LORD\u00a0will choose. Be careful to do everything they direct you to do.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Act according to the law they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The man who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the\u00a0LORD\u00a0your God must be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 8-13: \u00a0Here Moses tells the Israelites what to do if they have problems or disputes that are too complicated for them to resolve on their own: they are to bring those disputes to the priests and to the judge of that town.\u00a0 They are to respect the advice and decisions that the priests and judges give.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0 A general principle we can take from this is:\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t show contempt for those in authority, but show respect.<\/strong>\u00a0 As Romans 13:1 says, \u201cEveryone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.
