{"id":22975,"date":"2022-09-06T22:00:45","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T05:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/romans-5_1-11-copy\/"},"modified":"2022-08-15T12:03:04","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T19:03:04","slug":"romans-5_12-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/romans-5_12-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Adam\u2019s Sin < Jesus\u2019 Sacrifice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Romans 5:12-21 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+5%3A12-21&amp;version=ESV\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22977 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/22-0907.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/22-0907.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/22-0907-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Romans 5:12-21.\u00a0 The key to reading and understanding this passage is to read it slowly, verse by verse.\u00a0 So that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do.\u00a0 In this case we\u2019re going to look at the ESV translation of this passage because I think it\u2019s a little easier to understand than the NIV.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:12 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned\u2014<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 12:\u00a0 Starting here in Romans 5:12, Paul begins to describe some of the problems that came about because Adam in Genesis 3 broke God\u2019s command.\u00a0 The first problem is that sin entered the world (\u201csin came into the world\u201d) and affected us all.\u00a0 The second problem is that, as a consequence of sin, humanity became subject to death.\u00a0 By \u201cdeath\u201d Paul means not only physical death, but spiritual death (i.e. total separation from God).\u00a0 Since Adam sinned, these remain two of humanity\u2019s biggest problems: sin and death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:13 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 13:\u00a0 By the \u201claw\u201d, Paul is referring to the laws which God gave Moses for the Israelites to obey and which are found in the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, also known as \u201cthe law of Moses\u201d.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s point in verse 13 is to say that sin existed even before the law of Moses did.\u00a0 When verse 13 says that \u201csin is not counted where there is no law\u201d, that\u2019s not to say that sin cannot exist apart from law, but rather that it is much easier to measure sin when there are specific, written laws in place to govern our behaviour.\u00a0 But just because the law of Moses did not exist prior to Moses\u2019 time doesn\u2019t mean that there was no such thing as sin before Moses\u2019 time.\u00a0 Rather, sin was in the world long before Moses laid down God\u2019s laws for the Israelites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:14 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 14:\u00a0\u00a0 Here Paul is saying that from the time that Adam sinned to the time of Moses, everyone was subject to death, even those who did not break the same specific command that Adam broke in Genesis 3.\u00a0 Paul here is showing how extensive was the impact of Adam\u2019s sin \u2013 how as a result death affected everybody who came after him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:15 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man\u2019s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 15:\u00a0 Starting in verse 15, Paul compares the results that Adam\u2019s sin brought versus the results that the free gift of Christ\u2019s sacrifice brought.\u00a0 Whereas Adam\u2019s sin resulted in death for many, the free gift that Jesus gave resulted in God\u2019s grace (undeserved kindness) for many.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:16 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And the free gift is not like the result of that one man\u2019s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 16:\u00a0 Here Paul compares the power of Adam\u2019s sin to the power of Jesus\u2019 sacrifice.\u00a0 Whereas condemnation came to humanity after Adam had sinned just once, justification (being declared righteous) through Jesus came to humanity even after many sins had taken place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:17 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For if, because of one man\u2019s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 17:\u00a0 Whereas Adam\u2019s sin resulted in death reigning over humanity, Christ\u2019s sacrifice resulted in people reigning over death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:18-19 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For as by the one man\u2019s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man\u2019s obedience the many will be made righteous.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 18-19:\u00a0 Whereas Adam\u2019s one sin led to everyone being condemned as sinners, Christ\u2019s one sacrifice led to justification and life being made available to everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:20 (ESV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 20:\u00a0 Paul says that the law was introduced to \u201cincrease the trespass\u201d, that is, to make it that much clearer where and in what ways we have sinned.\u00a0 Yet as much as our awareness of sin increased because of the law, God made His grace available to us in even greater ways.\u00a0 Praise God that His mercy outstretches our sins, even when our sins seem to be increasing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Romans 5:21 (ESV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 21:\u00a0 Whereas death is the territory where sin reigns, righteousness and eternal life are the territory where grace reigns.\u00a0 God would not let sin and death have the final word.\u00a0 So when our sins (or our awareness of our sins) increased with the coming of God\u2019s law, God made sure that His grace increased that much more so that grace, righteousness and eternal life would reign in the end.\u00a0 He did so by sending Jesus to die on the cross and to rise again from the grave.\u00a0 Through His death and resurrection, Jesus conquered our two biggest problems for us: sin and death.<\/p>\n<p><em>Father, thank You for how powerful, important and far reaching was Christ\u2019s sacrifice on the cross for all of us.\u00a0 Thank You that Your mercy outstretches our mistakes, and that through Jesus we now can reign over death and sin.\u00a0 \u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name,
