{"id":2575,"date":"2019-04-04T20:00:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T03:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/?p=2575"},"modified":"2019-03-31T21:53:22","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T04:53:22","slug":"1kings_16_29-34","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/1kings_16_29-34\/","title":{"rendered":"It Matters Whom You Marry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>1 Kings 16:29-34 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Kings+16%3A29-34&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2576 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/190405.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/190405.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/190405-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/190405-450x225.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s passage is 1 Kings 16:29-34.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1 Kings\u00a016:31\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 29-33:\u00a0 These verses summarize the 22 year reign of Ahab as king of Israel, although we will read about Ahab again in later chapters of 1 Kings.\u00a0 One can make the argument that Ahab was the most wicked king in Israel&#8217;s history.\u00a0 According to the writer of 1 Kings, Ahab &#8220;did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him&#8221; (v30) and &#8220;did more to provoke the Lord to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him&#8221; (v32).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to worshiping the idols that Jeroboam had set up and leading Israel to do the same, Ahab did other things that were evil in God&#8217;s sight.\u00a0 For example, Ahab married Jezebel, a princess daughter of the Sidonians and a zealous worshipper of the idol Baal.\u00a0 In her zeal for Baal worship, Jezebel would make it her personal mission to kill off the Lord&#8217;s prophets in Israel (see 1 Kings 18:4).<\/p>\n<p>Because of his marriage to Jezebel, Ahab too &#8220;began to serve Baal and worship him&#8221; (v31), opening the door to Baal worship throughout Israel.\u00a0 Ahab would end up building a temple and altar for the idol Baal in the capital city of Israel.\u00a0 He also made an Asherah pole (v33), dedicated to honour the idol Asherah, whom Baal worshipers believed to be a fertility goddess.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that Ahab&#8217;s descent into Baal worship was the direct result of him marrying Jezebel, an ardent Baal worshiper.\u00a0 What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>It matters whom you marry.\u00a0 The spiritual life of the person you marry will have a huge impact on your own life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>So if you want to love and follow Jesus, do not marry someone who does not love or follow Jesus.\u00a0 Otherwise, like Ahab and Solomon, you will inevitably compromise your relationship with Jesus and open the door to idolatry in your life, family and home, both in your generation and the generations after you. \u00a0 That idolatry may not be in the form of physically bowing down to a statue, but may come in other forms: worshiping money, worshiping ourselves, or putting anything else before the Lord. It is no wonder that the Bible warns over and over again that God&#8217;s people should not marry those who do not worship the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1 Kings\u00a016:34\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>In Ahab&#8217;s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho.
