{"id":26098,"date":"2023-04-30T22:00:22","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T05:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/jude-1_1-7-copy\/"},"modified":"2023-04-18T11:59:41","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T18:59:41","slug":"jude-1_8-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/jude-1_8-16\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Ways You Can Unwittingly Put Your Foot in Your Mouth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>Jude 1:8-16<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jude+1%3A8-16&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26105 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/23-0501a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/23-0501a.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/23-0501a-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s passage is\u00a0Jude\u00a01:8-16.\u00a0\u00a0In the following passage,\u00a0Jude\u00a0will describe five ways that you can put your foot in your mouth \u2013 that is, five ways that you can do damage (especially to yourself) with your words.\u00a0 The first one is in verse 8, the other four are in verse 16.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p>Your words are powerful.\u00a0 Here\u00a0Jude\u00a0describes five ways that you can put your foot in your mouth \u2013 that is, five ways that you can do damage (especially to yourself) with your words.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jude\u00a01:8-10 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, &#8220;The Lord rebuke you!&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals&#8211;these are the very things that destroy them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 8-10:\u00a0 The first way that the false teachers in\u00a0Jude\u2019s time were putting their foot in their mouths was by \u201cheap[ing] abuse on celestial beings\u201d (v8).\u00a0 In other words, these false teachers would speak slanderous things about God, Satan, angels and demons, perhaps belittling them or making a joke of them.\u00a0 \u00a0Jude\u00a0says that these false teachers were making a mistake, for \u201ceven the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, \u201cThe Lord rebuke you!\u201d\u00a0 (v9).<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words, be serious and not disrespectful in your speech about God, angels, demons and the devil.\u00a0 If you are going to engage in spiritual warfare and rebuke the devil, don\u2019t do so flippantly and don\u2019t try to do it in your own name or in your own power.\u00a0 If you rebuke the devil, do so only in the name of the Lord Jesus and sincerely trusting in the saving power of Jesus\u2019 name, for it is Jesus\u2019 name, not your own, that has defeated the devil.<\/strong>\u00a0 It is dangerous to try to rebuke the devil if you have not trusted in Jesus first, or to battle the devil in a name other than the name of Jesus. (See Acts 19:13-16 as an example.)<\/p>\n<p>By the way, where else in Scripture does it mention that the archangel Michael disputed with the devil about the body of Moses (v9)?\u00a0 \u00a0There is no mention of this in Scripture.\u00a0\u00a0 Scholars say that this story comes from a book that is now lost called\u00a0<em>The Assumption of Moses<\/em>, which is not part of the Bible.\u00a0 It appears that\u00a0Jude\u00a0believed this story to be true.\u00a0 Does the fact that\u00a0Jude\u00a0refers to this story mean that the Bible should be expanded to include other books?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 The apostle Paul would cite poets of his day to help him prove his point, but not necessarily because he considered their words to be God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 \u00a0It is enough to treat this story as an interesting reference.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to speaking slanderously about the devil, evil spirits and angels, these false teachers would also \u201cpollute their own bodies\u201d (v8) (probably a reference to engaging in sexually immoral activities and abusing substances that are harmful to the body).\u00a0\u00a0 They would also \u201creject authority\u201d (probably referring to their rebellion against their spiritual leaders).\u00a0 Their abusive talk (v10a) coupled with their self-centered actions (v10b) would lead to their downfall.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jude\u00a01:11 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam&#8217;s error; they have been destroyed in Korah&#8217;s rebellion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 11:\u00a0 Here\u2019s a little chart that may help to understand verse 11:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" tabindex=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/ci3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/5E8hyhMf0-CuxSy6Hc1t9OKSBZTh9jaSse0T5OhJ0tic63Gzr-WVow3CmqLbHZtasrteoMNl3zBhMfM9IAhSwGAqxJNwfMs0SI90n137zIUbcYYzq4P0D-yHR1MXEWGh3FnohId6tQPkGLUBTpfeCg9-HQNxILP8eQo=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214\/images\/4e41707c-d380-45d6-b772-d09a8a249e76.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"370\" data-bit=\"iit\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When we don\u2019t take the worship of God seriously like Cain, when we love money more than integrity like Balaam, and when we act seditiously and rebelliously against the authorities God has placed in our lives like Korah, we move far away from the lives God made us to live and suffer as a result.<\/strong>\u00a0 Unlike Cain, give your best when you worship God.\u00a0 Unlike Balaam, love integrity more than money.\u00a0 Unlike Korah, follow, honour and pray for your God-given leaders.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jude\u00a01:12-15 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm&#8211;shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted&#8211;twice dead.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: &#8220;See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 12-15: With poetic imagery\u00a0Jude\u00a0describes these false teachers as \u201cblemishes\u201d, \u201cclouds without rain\u201d, \u201ctwice dead autumn trees in that they are both uprooted and fruitless\u201d (v12), \u201cwild waves\u201d and \u201cwandering stars\u201d (v13). Then in verses 14-15\u00a0Jude\u00a0seems to quote from the book of Enoch, a book which was written approximately between 300 and 100 BC and which is not part of the Bible.\u00a0 Does this mean that the Bible should be expanded to include the book of Enoch?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Neither Jesus nor the apostles ever called the book of Enoch Scripture.\u00a0 While the book of Enoch was valued by some early church fathers, there was never enough consensus among the apostles and early church fathers to conclude that the book of Enoch deserved recognition as Scripture and it would be unwise for us to try to include it now based on one small quotation from this book.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jude\u00a01:16 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 16:\u00a0 Here\u00a0Jude\u00a0mentions four other ways that the false teachers put their foot in their mouths:<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0 By being grumblers \u2013 that is, by complaining about their leaders and their situations;<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0 By being faultfinders \u2013 that is, by speaking about people only with the intent of criticizing and slandering them;<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0 By boasting about themselves;<\/p>\n<p>By flattering others.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>What is the difference between flattery and encouragement?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Encouragement is given with the purpose of building up the listener.\u00a0 Flattery is given with the purpose of furthering the speaker\u2019s own agenda.\u00a0 Encouragement is sincere and based on truth;
