{"id":26923,"date":"2023-06-27T22:00:58","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T05:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/colossians-2_16-23-copy\/"},"modified":"2023-06-13T20:44:25","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T03:44:25","slug":"colossians-3_1-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/colossians-3_1-11\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Put a Bad Habit to Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Colossians 3:1-11 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians+3%3A1-11&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26925 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/23-0628.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/23-0628.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/23-0628-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Colossians 3:1-11.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colossians 3:1-10 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-10: \u00a0Yesterday we learned from\u00a0Colossians\u00a02:16-23 that our focus needs to be on Jesus, not on our own effort.\u00a0 If that&#8217;s the case, should we still bother trying to become more holy, or trying to have a GAME time, or trying to go to church or small group? Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 Paul is not saying &#8220;don&#8217;t work at all on your relationship with God&#8221; or &#8220;don&#8217;t try to grow spiritually&#8221;. He&#8217;s saying spend your effort and time on what really matters, which is becoming more like Christ.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of focusing so much on things like dietary regulations or angel worship, things which God did not require Christians to follow, Paul encourages the Colossian church to focus on living, thinking, feeling and acting more like Christ.\u00a0 As part of this, Paul tells the church to &#8220;put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature&#8221; (v5).\u00a0 Then he lists a number of sins, including:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; sexual immorality (which is having sex outside of marriage)<br \/>\n&#8211; impurity<br \/>\n&#8211; lust<br \/>\n&#8211; evil desires<br \/>\n&#8211; greed (which Paul equates with idolatry) (v5)<br \/>\n&#8211; anger<br \/>\n&#8211; rage<br \/>\n&#8211; malice<br \/>\n&#8211; slander<br \/>\n&#8211; filthy language (v8)<br \/>\n&#8211; lying (v9)<\/p>\n<p>Paul says that the wrath of God is coming because of such sins (v6), a reminder that God looks at sin seriously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you struggle with any of these sins listed above?\u00a0 How do you put to death things like sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed (v5), anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language (v8), and lying (v9)? \u00a0<\/strong>If you struggle with any of these sins, listen up.\u00a0 From today&#8217;s passage we learn\u00a03\u00a0ways we can put to death these sins that we struggle with:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1<\/strong><strong>.\u00a0 Remember your new identity in Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, remember that God has given you a new identity.\u00a0 Your old life is dead and your new life is found in Christ.\u00a0 You are now &#8220;raised with Christ&#8221; (v1).\u00a0 Just as Paul says in verse\u00a03: &#8220;For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.&#8221; \u00a0Christ is now your life, and when He returns, you will appear with Him in glory (v4).\u00a0 That&#8217;s your new identity.\u00a0 You are a brand new person in Christ, not a sinner but a saint.<\/p>\n<p>So\u00a0<strong>if you find that as a brand new person in Christ you&#8217;re still sinning in old ways, one reason could be a case of mistaken identity; you&#8217;ve forgotten who you really are!<\/strong>\u00a0 You&#8217;re like Lazarus at that moment when Jesus raised him from the dead (John 11): he&#8217;s still wearing his old grave clothes and unsure if he&#8217;s dead or alive.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Like Lazarus, you need to take those grave clothes off and realize that you&#8217;re not dead anymore!<\/strong>\u00a0 You have a new life in Christ.\u00a0 As Paul says in verse 9b-10, &#8220;you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As a brand new person in Christ, you don&#8217;t need to go back to your old way of living.\u00a0 You have a new identity now.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong>Decide that you will not live in sin anymore.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notice Paul does not say, &#8220;Let sin die&#8221;.\u00a0 Instead he says, &#8220;<em>put it to death<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 In other words, be intentional and decide that you will no longer let sin control your life.\u00a0 As Paul says in verses 7-8, &#8220;You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.\u00a0 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a sinful habit you need to be intentional about removing from your life?<\/strong>\u00a0 For as long as you entertain the idea of keeping it, you&#8217;re allowing sin to still have an influence on your life.\u00a0 Decide that you will not live that way anymore.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>Set your heart and mind on things above.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notice Paul says in verse\u00a01\u00a0&#8220;set your heart on\u00a0<em>things above<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Then he says in verse 2, &#8220;set your mind on\u00a0<em>things above<\/em>, not on earthly things.&#8221; \u00a0Why?\u00a0 It&#8217;s because putting to death your old way of living is not just about removing the sinful habits that used to destroy your life.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also about setting your heart (v1) and mind (v2) on things above.<\/p>\n<p>In Philippians 4, Paul puts it this way: &#8220;Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable&#8211;if anything is excellent or praiseworthy&#8211;think about such things&#8230;And the God of peace will be with you&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In other words,\u00a0<strong>setting your heart and mind on things above means filling your heart and mind with things that are beneficial, uplifting and pleasing to God<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; whether it&#8217;s the music you listen to, the entertainment you watch, the books you read, or the people you allow to influence your life.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best ways you can set your heart and mind on things above is to read God&#8217;s Word every day, pray, and worship with your church family.\u00a0 When you set your heart and mind on things above things above, sin has no more room to creep back into your life.\u00a0 You&#8217;re keeping your old life where it belongs: in the grave.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colossians<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>3<\/strong><strong>:11\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 11: \u00a0As followers of Jesus may our focus not be on how different we are in background compared to the other people in our church.\u00a0 Rather, let our focus always be on Jesus (&#8220;Christ is all&#8221;) and how He lives in all of us (&#8220;Christ is in all&#8221;).\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus, thank You that You are making me into Your image. Help me to do my part in this process. Help me to put to death the sin of [<\/em><strong><em>identify a sin from verses 5, 8-9 that you&#8217;ve been struggling with lately<\/em><\/strong><em>].\u00a0 Thank You that You died to forgive me of this sin and You rose again so that I could have victory over sin.\u00a0 May I remember that I have a new identity in You.\u00a0 Sin no longer has any hold over me.\u00a0 And today I set my heart and mind on things above.
