So Paul and his team had “an intense longing” and “made every effort” to see them, but Satan stopped them.

How exactly did Satan stop them? Was it an illness, continued persecution or some other problem? We don’t know the details, but it is clear that Paul, despite wanting so much to be with the Thessalonian Christians, could not be with them temporarily.

What can we learn from this? Spiritual warfare is real. We have an enemy who is out to steal, kill and destroy the work of God in our lives.

So don’t be surprised if you meet opposition while trying to do the will of God. Don’t let the opposition discourage you. Stand firm in prayer. Exercise the authority you have in Christ as a child of God. If you find that the opposition against you is strong, you can say, “In Jesus’ name, Satan I bind you from trying to harm me and my family.” Or, as a sister of ours likes to say, “Not today, Satan!” As children of God, we have been given authority to resist Satan. That’s why James 4:7 says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). For greater is the one who lives in us is greater than our enemy (1 John 4:4).

1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 (NIV)
19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?
