{"id":27839,"date":"2023-09-05T22:00:12","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T05:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/judges-21_1-25-copy\/"},"modified":"2023-08-22T15:10:31","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T22:10:31","slug":"1-timothy-1_1-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/1-timothy-1_1-11\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Friends Every Christian Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>1 Timothy 1:1-11\u00a0 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Timothy+1%3A1-11&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here for Bible Verses<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27841 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/23-0906.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/23-0906.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/23-0906-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today we begin the book of\u00a01\u00a0Timothy. \u00a01\u00a0Timothy\u00a0is a letter written by Paul in approximately 63-66 AD to his spiritual son\u00a0Timothy.\u00a0 At the time,\u00a0Timothy\u00a0was leading a large church that Paul helped to start in the city of Ephesus.\u00a0 So Paul writes this letter to Timothy to give Timothy some guidance on how to effectively lead the church in Ephesus.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s passage is\u00a01\u00a0Timothy\u00a01:1-11.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1\u00a0Timothy\u00a01:1-2 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>To\u00a0Timothy\u00a0my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-2: \u00a0In these two verses we see the\u00a0<strong>3 friends you can&#8217;t live without, 3 friends that every Christian needs<\/strong>.\u00a0 First and foremost, we all need Jesus Christ as &#8220;our hope&#8221; (v1) and &#8220;our Lord&#8221; (v2).\u00a0 Second, we all need a Paul, a pastor and spiritual father in our lives who teaches us God&#8217;s Word and models what it means to follow Jesus.\u00a0 Third, we all need a\u00a0Timothy, someone younger in the faith than we are and whom we&#8217;re leading to Christ and investing in.\u00a0 Do you have a\u00a0Timothy\u00a0in your life?\u00a0 If not, it&#8217;s time to find one to invest in.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1 Timothy 1:3-7 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God&#8217;s work&#8211;which is by faith.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 3-7: \u00a0Here Paul urges\u00a0Timothy\u00a0to exercise his authority as the pastor of his church and to command certain people in his congregation to stop teaching false doctrine and promoting unproductive talk.\u00a0 Paul was concerned about these false teachers for two reasons: (1) these false teachers were teaching things that were either untrue or unhelpful; and (2) whereas teaching God&#8217;s Word should always come out of &#8220;a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith&#8221; (v5), Paul discerned that these false teachers had wandered away from these and were instead focused on elevating themselves, trying to be seen as teachers, and turning to meaningless talk (v6).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this? \u00a0<strong>When teaching others, we need to check both our content and our motives.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0We must check that the content of what we are teaching is true and helpful.\u00a0 We must also check our motives to ensure that our teaching is motivated by love for our hearers, to build them up.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>1\u00a0Timothy\u00a01:8-11 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers&#8211;and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 8-11: \u00a0It appears that some people in the church of Ephesus were misapplying God\u2019s law, either teaching that God&#8217;s law is bad or using God\u2019s law in ways that God\u2019s law was never intended to be used.\u00a0 But Paul affirms that God&#8217;s law is good if used properly.\u00a0 God&#8217;s law was given to make us aware of where we go wrong or where our behaviour deviates from God&#8217;s best for our lives.\u00a0 Ultimately, God&#8217;s law was given to lead us to Jesus Christ, to help us see our need for Him as our Saviour (see Galatians 3:24).\u00a0 What&#8217;s the lesson here? \u00a0<strong>Don&#8217;t despise God&#8217;s law, but thank God that He used His law to ultimately lead us to Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Father, thank You for Your Son Jesus, my greatest friend.\u00a0 Thank You also for the Paul&#8217;s and the\u00a0Timothy&#8217;s in my life.\u00a0 May I never take these friends for granted.\u00a0 Thank You also for Your laws, without which I wouldn&#8217;t have known that I am a sinner in need of a Saviour.\u00a0 Thank You that Your laws ultimately led me to Jesus.\u00a0 In Jesus&#8217; name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <em> <em> Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
