Today\u2019s passage is 2\u00a0Timothy\u00a03:1-9.\u00a0 Let’s go!<\/p>\n

2 Timothy 3:1-9 (NIV)<\/strong>
\n1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
\n2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
\n4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God–
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.
\n8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth–men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses\u00a01-9: By “last days” what does Paul mean?\u00a0 “Last days” is a term used by various New Testament writers (e.g.\u00a01\u00a0Peter\u00a01:20;\u00a02\u00a0Peter\u00a03:3; Hebrews\u00a01:2; James 5:3).\u00a0 Generally speaking in the New Testament \u201clast days\u201d means the entire period starting from Christ ascending to heaven until his eventual return to earth.\u00a0\u00a0So right now we\u2019re living in the \u201clast days\u201d.<\/p>\n

Here Paul is saying that during these last days, something terrible will happen:\u00a0 false teachers will try to influence Christ’s church and lead Christians astray.<\/p>\n

How do a recognize a false teacher?\u00a0 In verses\u00a01-9,\u00a0Paul gives three clues by which you can recognize a false teacher.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, a false teacher will typically exhibit ungodly character (v1-5).<\/strong>\u00a0 The false teachers Paul is warning\u00a0Timothy\u00a0against certainly had charisma, but their character left much to be desired.\u00a0 In verses\u00a01-5, Paul uses approximately 19 characteristics to describe the false teachers he has seen:
\n– lovers of themselves
\n– lovers of money
\n– boastful
\n– prideful
\n– abusive
\n– disobedient to their parents
\n– ungrateful
\n– unholy
\n– unloving
\n– unforgiving
\n– slandering others
\n– having no self-control
\n– brutal\/cruel
\n– not lovers of what is good
\n– treacherous (i.e. people who betray other people’s trust)
\n– rash
\n– conceited
\n– loving pleasure more than loving God<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It’s not just what a person says that makes them worth following or learning from.\u00a0 It’s how that person lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>If a person claims to be a teacher worth listening to, but they consistently exhibit ungodly character, that person is not worth following or listening to.<\/p>\n

Perhaps you are looking at the above list of characteristics and can relate to some of them.\u00a0 That is why we need the blood of Jesus Christ to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from unrighteousness.\u00a0 But if someone wants to be a teacher of God’s Word, they must not only be saved but sanctified as well.\u00a0 That is, they will not be perfect, but they must show a high degree of godliness and maturity in their character.\u00a0 So if a person claims to be a spiritual teacher but displays ungodly characteristics on a consistent basis, then their self-proclaimed godliness is a powerless one.\u00a0 As Paul says, “have nothing to do with them” (v5).<\/p>\n

Second, in the case of a false teacher, their closest and most loyal followers will unapologetically exhibit ungodly character too.<\/strong>\u00a0 As for the false teachers that were threatening\u00a0Timothy’s church, Paul notes that their closest followers were weak-willed women who were held captive by sinful habits and swayed by all kinds of evil desires (v6). These followers were “always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth” (v7); in other words, they had an insatiable curiosity to learn and experience new things, but they could not centre themselves around Christ.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from this?\u00a0 When deciding whether to follow or learn from someone, consider the quality of that person’s closest followers.\u00a0 (By “closest follower” I don’t mean just anyone who says that they listen to him\/her, but those who spend the most time with that person and\/or those whom that teacher considers to be his\/her “best” or “model” students.) If a teacher’s closest followers or “model students” are themselves unashamedly immoral and ungodly, then you must question whether you want to become a close follower of that teacher as well.<\/p>\n

Third, a false teacher rejects the clear truths of God’s Word.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>In verse 8, Paul compares the false teachers in\u00a0Timothy’s church to Jannes and Jambres.\u00a0 According to Jewish tradition, Jannes and Jambres were the names given\u00a0to the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses.\u00a0 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed the truth, false teachers are those who reject the clear truths of God’s Word and the clear message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

What can we learn from all this?\u00a0\u00a0When it comes to learning spiritual truth, you can tell whether a person is worth following, or whether their teaching is worth learning from, by looking at the fruit they bear — in particular, that person’s character, the quality of that person’s closest followers, and the content of that person’s teaching as compared to the Bible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus says something similar in\u00a0Matthew 7:15-20:
\n15\u00a0<\/sup>“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
\n16\u00a0<\/sup>By their fruit you will recognize them<\/strong>. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
\n17\u00a0<\/sup>Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
\n18\u00a0<\/sup>A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
\n19\u00a0<\/sup>Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
\n20\u00a0<\/sup>Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Since we are all called to live out loud and to lead others to Jesus,\u00a0let’s be careful to watch our character, our conduct and the content of our teaching<\/strong>.\u00a0 May we live lives of godly character and do a good job of pointing others to Jesus the only perfect One.<\/p>\n

Father, may I be discerning enough to consider the fruit of a person’s life before I allow them to influence me too much.\u00a0 May I be influenced by people in Your kingdom whose teaching is in line with Your Word, whose character is full of Christ-likeness, and whose ministry bears good fruit.\u00a0 May I be that kind of Christ-like leader too.\u00a0 In Jesus’ name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n

\n14\u00a0\u00a0Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
\n15\u00a0\u00a0Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
\n16\u00a0\u00a0Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
\n17\u00a0\u00a0Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
\n18\u00a0\u00a0who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.<\/p>\n
