{"id":28692,"date":"2023-11-08T22:00:25","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T05:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/1-john-5_1-12-copy\/"},"modified":"2023-10-31T20:02:12","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T03:02:12","slug":"1-john-5_13-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/1-john-5_13-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Confident Because of Jesus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>1 John 5:13-21<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+John+5%3A13-21&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28694 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/23-1109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/23-1109.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/23-1109-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is 1 John 5:13-21.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1 John 5:13-15 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0And if we know that he hears us&#8211;whatever we ask&#8211;we know that we have what we asked of him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 13-15:\u00a0 John writes so that his readers would have confidence in their salvation (v13) and confidence that God hears their prayers (v14-15).\u00a0 As those who believe in the name of the Son of God, we can have the same confidence as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1 John 5:16-17 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 16-17:\u00a0 In addition to being confident that we have eternal life and being confident that God hears our prayers, we can be confident that when we pray for others who confess their sins to us, God uses our prayers to restore and strengthen them.\u00a0 The sole exception is when a person commits the \u201csin that leads to death\u201d (v16).<\/p>\n<p>What is the &#8220;sin that leads to death&#8221;?\u00a0 I believe the best interpretation is that the sin that leads to death is the total rejection of Jesus as Saviour.\u00a0 Elsewhere Jesus calls this blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10).\u00a0 It\u2019s where a person\u2019s heart is so hard that they continually reject the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives, persist in their refusal to believe in Jesus and consciously renounce any faith in Him for as long as they live.\u00a0 Only in connection with such sin does Jesus say the sinner will not be forgiven (Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1 John 5:18-19 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 18-19:\u00a0 While the evil one is said to be in control of the world (v19) and while he will try to attack God\u2019s children, the evil one cannot do permanent harm to God\u2019s children or cause them to lose their salvation (v18).\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever wondered, \u201cCan a Christian be possessed by the devil?\u201d the answer is no because demon possession requires that the devil takes possession of the person\u2019s spirit, soul and body.\u00a0 That is something the devil cannot do to Christians, because Christians have already committed their lives to Jesus and let the Holy Spirit take possession of it.\u00a0 While it is possible for the devil to attack or oppress a Christian, the devil cannot possess a Christian.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1 John 5:20 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 20a:\u00a0 Jesus came so that we could understand and know \u201chim who is true\u201d, that is God the Father.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1 John 5:20 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0\u2026And we are in him who is true&#8211;even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 20b:\u00a0 Through Jesus, not only can we know and understand the Father, but we can also be in the Father (that is, have an everlasting relationship with Him) and in His Son Jesus Christ.\u00a0 The last sentence in this verse speaks to Jesus being divine, for when John writes, \u201cHe is the true God\u201d, he is referring to Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus is our way to understanding and knowing God, and Jesus\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0God Himself.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1 John 5:21 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 21:\u00a0 With the help of the Spirit we can know Him who is true (that is God the Father) and His Son Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Thus we have no need for worshiping anything else.\u00a0 That is why John ends his letter with the command, \u201ckeep yourselves from idols\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Father, thank You that because of Jesus we can be confident that we have eternal life, confident that You hear our prayers, confident that our prayers can help our fellow brothers and sisters, confident that we are safe and secure from the enemy, and confident that we can know You personally.\u00a0 It\u2019s all because of Jesus.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This ends our look at 1 John.\u00a0 What were the most important lessons you learned in this book?\u00a0 I encourage you to look back and make a list of them and keep them as a bookmark in your Bible so that whenever you come across 1 John in the future you can remember what you learned.<\/p>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
