This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-4:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Here the writer of\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0starts to compare two messages.\u00a0\u00a0The first message is the message of the old covenant, a message that was \u201cspoken by angels\u201d (v2; see also Galatians\u00a03:19) to Moses.\u00a0\u00a0The message of the old covenant is all about God\u2019s law.\u00a0\u00a0The essence of the old covenant message is: \u201cObey God\u2019s law and be blessed.\u00a0\u00a0Disobey God\u2019s law and die.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The old covenant message was binding on the Israelites.\u00a0\u00a0Those who disobeyed the law of Moses were punished (v2).<\/p>\n<p>The second message is the message of salvation (v3). It\u2019s a message which says that we have broken God\u2019s law and need a Saviour to save us from our sins, and that Saviour\u2019s name is Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>The point of these verses is to show that the message of salvation is greater than the old covenant message.\u00a0 We can know this based on who was sent to announce these messages.\u00a0 Whereas the old covenant message was announced by angels (v2), the message of salvation was \u201cannounced by the Lord\u201d Jesus (v3), confirmed by his disciples (v3), and, as we see in the book of Acts and even to this day, testified to by the Holy Spirit through signs, wonders, miracles and gifts (v4).<\/p>\n<p>While the first message was about God\u2019s law and our performance, the second message is about God\u2019s grace and our need for a Saviour.\u00a0\u00a0The writer of\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0is saying that we need to \u201cpay more careful attention\u201d (v1) to this second message, lest we miss the salvation that comes from it.\u00a0\u00a0The consequences of not realizing that we need a Saviour and that this Saviour is Jesus are fatal.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Jesus, together with the disciples and the Holy Spirit, is the announcer of our salvation, the one who spoke God\u2019s message of salvation to us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hebrews<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:5-8 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0But there is a place where someone has testified: &#8220;What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0and put everything under his feet.&#8221; In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 5-8:\u00a0\u00a0Here the writer of Hebrews is saying that Jesus is greater than the angels because God has placed everything not under the angels\u2019 authority but under Jesus\u2019 authority.\u00a0 Looking at the way angels are described in the Bible, some angels certainly seem to have a great deal of authority.\u00a0 Still they don\u2019t compare to the authority that Jesus has.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Jesus says in Matthew 28:18 that \u201cAll authority in heaven and\u00a0<em>on earth<\/em>\u00a0has been given to Me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To help support the idea that God has placed everything under Jesus\u2019 feet, in verses 6-8, the writer of Hebrews quotes Psalm 8:4-6 in the Old Testament and interprets it \u201cman\u201d in Psalm 8:4-6 to refer to Jesus.\u00a0 Despite being human and \u201ca little lower than the angels (v7), God crowned Jesus with glory and honour and put everything under his feet (v7-8).<\/p>\n<p>Even though Jesus is the rightful ruler of everything in this world, the writer of Hebrews acknowledges that right now (\u201cat present\u201d \u2013 v8) we do not see everything being subject to Jesus, for in this world we still see sin, suffering and death.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s because Satan has been allowed to continue to squat in this world and to wreak certain havoc until the day that Jesus Christ, the rightful ruler, comes again.<\/p>\n<p>From this we learn that\u00a0<strong>Jesus is not only God, but He is the greatest human too, and Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hebrews<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:9-10 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 9-10:\u00a0\u00a0The reason Jesus is crowned with glory and honor above and beyond any other human being is because Jesus suffered for our sins and tasted death for all of us (v9).\u00a0\u00a0Jesus became human like us so that he could suffer on our behalf and through his suffering become the author of our salvation, \u201cbringing\u00a0many sons to glory\u201d (i.e. bringing many people back to God) (v9).\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Jesus is not only the announcer of God\u2019s message of salvation, but Jesus is also the agent who made that salvation possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, notice verse 10 says, \u201cGod, for whom and through everything exists\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0The reason you and I exist, the reason we have what we have, is for God\u2019s glory and through God\u2019s power.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>It is for God and through God that we exist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Father, thank You for all these crucial and important truths You are teaching us through the book of\u00a0<\/em><em>Hebrews<\/em><em>.\u00a0\u00a0Thank You that Your Son Jesus became like us, a little lower than the angels, and tasted death for us all, so that we could have salvation.\u00a0\u00a0May we pay more attention to this message of salvation than before so that we will never drift away.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
