But God said to him, &#8220;You are my Son; today I have become your Father.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And he says in another place, &#8220;You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0During the days of Jesus&#8217; life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-10:\u00a0\u00a0In verses\u00a01-4 the writer of\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0describes how the high priest under Jewish law was appointed and what that high priest did.\u00a0\u00a0The high priest:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0was selected from among his own people (v1a)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0was appointed to represent the people in God-related matters and to offer gifts and sacrifices to God for people\u2019s sins, including his own (v1b)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0dealt gently with sinners because he himself could sympathize with their weaknesses (v2)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0did not take up the honor of being a high priest on his own initiative, but must be called by God (v4).<\/p>\n<p>Then in verses\u00a05-10 the writer of\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0shows how Jesus\u2019 appointment as our high priest was perfect and that what Jesus did as our high priest was perfect:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Just as a high priest would not appoint himself but was called by God, Jesus did not assume the position of high priest on his own, but was called by God to do so (v5-6).\u00a0\u00a0Here the writer of\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0emphasizes that Jesus\u2019 appointment as our high priest is especially appropriate because Jesus is the Son of God (v5) and belongs to the order of Melchizedek (v6).\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019ll go into more detail about what \u201cin the order of Melchizedek\u201d means when we look at chapter 7.<\/li>\n<li>Like an effective high priest, Jesus offered up passionate prayers and petitions to the Father and was heard because of his reverent attitude (v7)<\/li>\n<li>By becoming a man who was subject to the same temptations we face, Jesus the Son of God \u201clearned obedience\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0In other words, Jesus became intimately aware of what it is like to try to obey God in the midst of our temptations and struggles, yet He never sinned.\u00a0\u00a0By suffering this way, and by being called \u201cin the order of Melchizedek\u201d (something we\u2019ll look at in chapter 7) (v10), Jesus was \u201cmade perfect\u201d in his ability to empathize with us and became our perfect high priest (v8; see also\u00a0Hebrews\u00a02:10 and 4:15).<\/li>\n<li>As our high priest, Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice for people\u2019s sins: Himself.\u00a0\u00a0Thus Jesus \u201cbecame the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him\u201d (v9), that is, who trust in Him and submit to Him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Praise God!\u00a0<strong>Jesus is our perfectly appointed and perfectly capable high priest who perfectly represents us in all matters related to God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hebrews\u00a05:11-14 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn.<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God&#8217;s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 11-14:\u00a0\u00a0Before going on to teach more on Jesus our high priest, the writer of\u00a0Hebrews\u00a0takes a moment to rebuke his readers.\u00a0\u00a0He tells them that they are slow to learn (v11), that they ought to be teachers by now but still need to be spoon fed spiritually and taught the same basic truths of God\u2019s Word over and over again (v12).\u00a0\u00a0He suggests that they are like immature spiritual infants (v13) who don\u2019t know good from evil (v14).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>God made you to grow spiritually.\u00a0\u00a0You were never meant to stay in spiritual diapers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you know if you are still a spiritual baby?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Here are 4 clues from verses 11-14:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t feed yourself spiritually.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Like a young child who can\u2019t eat on their own, the only time you eat of God\u2019s Word is when someone forces you to sit down and spoon feeds you.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>You\u2019re a slave to a short attention span.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>You quickly tire of any teaching that isn\u2019t full of jokes and crazy stories.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t retain what you hear.\u00a0<\/strong>You don\u2019t take time to process and meditate on God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 You just sit passively when God\u2019s Word is being taught.\u00a0\u00a0As a result, so much of what you hear goes in one ear and out the other.\u00a0\u00a0You haven\u2019t really learned those truths even though you think, \u201cI\u2019ve heard this before\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t apply what you learn.\u00a0<\/strong>While you might generally know what you need to do, you don\u2019t do it.\u00a0 As a result, your judgment is dull and you often make decisions that show that you don\u2019t really know how to distinguish good from evil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>It is a sad and gross thing when a Christian, by reason of his or her own pride and laziness, refuses to grow.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s sad for them, for their leaders who try to lead them, and for the people whom God originally intended to bless through them.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>May you and I not just be born again in Christ but who grow up into the strong, mature Christ-like disciples that God made us to be.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Lord Jesus, thank You for being my perfectly appointed and perfectly faithful high priest.\u00a0\u00a0Thank You that You made me to grow and that growing spiritually is possible, if only I would consistently use what You have given me and not take it for granted.\u00a0\u00a0May I grow into the strong, Christ-like disciple You made me to be.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
