{"id":29507,"date":"2024-01-16T22:00:53","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T05:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/1-peter-3_13-22-copy\/"},"modified":"2024-01-09T22:14:05","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T05:14:05","slug":"1-peter-4_1-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/1-peter-4_1-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Can People Still Receive Salvation After They Die?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p><strong>1 Peter 4:1-11 <\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+4%3A1-11&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/24-0117.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/24-0117.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/24-0117-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs!<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is 1 Peter 4:1-11.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!\u00a0 As usual, I recommend that you read the whole passage by yourself first and see what you can glean on your own.\u00a0 Then take a look at this GAME sharing below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\u00a0Peter\u00a04:1-3\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do&#8211;living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-3:\u00a0 What does\u00a0Peter\u00a0mean in verse\u00a01\u00a0when he writes, \u201cbecause whoever suffers in his body is done with sin\u201d?\u00a0 For us Christians, the moment we die physically is the moment we go to heaven and are done with sin and its ill effects.\u00a0 Here\u00a0Peter\u00a0is saying: live that way now.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Think of your old life \u2013 the life you lived in the past before coming to Christ (v3) \u2013 as having died already.\u00a0 Now you are living a new life that is controlled by Christ, not by sin, a life lived for the will of God, not for our own selfish desires (v2).<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>You are a new creation in Christ.\u00a0 That is your identity, so live that way.<\/strong>\u00a0 As Paul says in Galatians\u00a02:20, \u201cI have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>1\u00a0Peter\u00a04:4-5 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 4-5:\u00a0 Whether we live for the will of God or for our own selfish desires,\u00a0<strong>all of us will have to give an account to God for the way we lived our lives on earth.\u00a0 It is His opinion about us that counts more than anyone else\u2019s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1\u00a0Peter\u00a04:6 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nOn verse 6:\u00a0 What does\u00a0Peter\u00a0mean when he says that \u201cthe gospel was preached even to those who are now dead\u201d? \u00a0<strong>Does\u00a0Peter\u00a0mean that people will still have the opportunity to hear the gospel and receive salvation after they die?<\/strong>\u00a0 No, such an interpretation would be wholly inconsistent with the theology of\u00a01\u00a0Peter\u00a0and the New Testament (see for example Luke\u00a016:26).\u00a0 Rather, \u201cthose who are now dead\u201d are those who believed in Jesus during their lifetime on earth and who have since died.\u00a0 (Note: the word \u201cnow\u201d does not literally appear in the original Greek but shows up in the NIV translation to help us understand the overall meaning of the verse.)\u00a0 So the best interpretation of verse 6 is that while Christians will die physically on earth (or in\u00a0Peter\u2019s words, \u201cbe judged according to men in regard to the body\u201d), they will have life even after death (or in\u00a0Peter\u2019s words, \u201clive according to God in regard to the spirit\u201d).\u00a0 The Christian\u2019s fate is just like that of Jesus, who \u201cwas put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit\u201d (1\u00a0Peter\u00a03:18).\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The great hope of Christianity is not that we will never die physically on earth, but that there is life after death in heaven with Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1\u00a0Peter\u00a04:7-11 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God&#8217;s grace in its various forms.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 7-11:\u00a0 Since \u201cthe end of all things in near\u201d (v7) and Jesus is coming soon, how should we live?<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Make prayer a priority (v7).<\/strong>\u00a0 Notice\u00a0Peter\u00a0says, \u201cBe clear minded and self-controlled\u00a0<em>so that\u00a0<\/em>you can pray.\u201d (v7) We often think we pray\u00a0<em>so that<\/em>\u00a0we can be clear-minded and self-controlled, and it is true that prayer helps us to have a clearer mind and more self-control.\u00a0 But the flipside (which verse 7 is getting at) is also true:\u00a0 the more clear-minded and self-controlled we are, the more able we are to pray.\u00a0 For example, go to bed at a reasonable time tonight instead of playing video games till\u00a02am and I bet tomorrow you\u2019ll have better energy to pray.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Above all, love your spiritual family in Christ deeply (v8; see also\u00a01\u00a0Peter\u00a01:22)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Be open-handed and hospitable to one another, sharing whatever gifts God has given you to help each other (v9-11).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Father, because Your Son Jesus Christ now lives in me, I proclaim that I am a new creation, controlled by the Spirit of God and not by sin.\u00a0 Because You are coming soon, may I make prayer, loving others and serving others my priority.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
