Today\u2019s passage is 2 Peter 3:1-9.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!\u00a0 As usual, I recommend that you read the whole passage by yourself first and see what you can glean on your own.\u00a0 Then take a look at this GAME sharing below.<\/p>\n

2<\/strong>\u00a0Peter<\/strong>\u00a03<\/strong>:<\/strong>1<\/strong>\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n1<\/sup>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them\u00a0<\/em>as reminders<\/strong>\u00a0to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse\u00a01:\u00a0 As an ongoing theme in\u00a02\u00a0Peter, we see that successful Christian living is not just about constantly learning new things; it\u2019s just as much about reminding ourselves of the truths of God\u2019s Word that we often forget or take for granted.\u00a0\u00a0How well you recall and rely on the promises of God\u2019s Word will determine how well you live and deal with life\u2019s challenges.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2<\/strong>\u00a0Peter<\/strong>\u00a03<\/strong>:<\/strong>2<\/strong>\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n2<\/sup>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0I want you to\u00a0<\/em>recall<\/strong>\u00a0the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and\u00a0<\/em>the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles<\/u><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verse\u00a02:\u00a0 How did the letters of Paul,\u00a0Peter, John, James and others become part of the New Testament?\u00a0 Sure, these individuals were important Christian leaders, but should we elevate the status of what they wrote to the level of God\u2019s Word and holy Scripture?\u00a0\u00a0Peter\u00a0gives us a clue into why.\u00a0 He writes, \u201cthe command given\u00a0by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 In other words,\u00a0during\u00a0<\/strong>Peter<\/strong>\u2019s time,<\/strong>\u00a0there was already an understanding in the early church that Jesus Christ was speaking through the apostles, similar to how the Holy Spirit inspired the Old Testament prophets<\/strong>\u00a0(see\u00a02\u00a0Peter\u00a01:20-21).\u00a0 That is why in verse\u00a02\u00a0Peter\u00a0puts the apostles\u2019 words on the same level as \u201cthe words spoken in the past by the holy prophets\u201d (i.e. the Old Testament prophecy books).\u00a0 Thus we treat the apostles\u2019 letters in the New Testament as God\u2019s Word, just like the early church did.<\/p>\n

2<\/strong>\u00a0Peter<\/strong>\u00a03<\/strong>:<\/strong>3<\/strong>-4 (NIV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n3<\/sup>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.\u00a0<\/em>
\n4\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses\u00a03-4:\u00a0 Why is it so important to recall the words of the prophets and apostles as found in the Bible?\u00a0 It\u2019s because\u00a0as you live in this world, other messages will try to compete for your attention and allegiance, including the messages of \u201cscoffers\u201d who mock people who live by faith and who preach a completely different message.\u00a0 Amid all other options, hang onto God\u2019s Word.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2<\/strong>\u00a0Peter<\/strong>\u00a03<\/strong>:5-7 (ESV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n5\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God,\u00a0<\/em>
\n6\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.\u00a0<\/em>
\n7\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 5-7:\u00a0 I particularly like the ESV translation of these verses because it emphasizes the role that God\u2019s Word played in creation (v5), in the great flood (v6) (\u201cby means of these\u201d refers not just to the water but also to the word), and in the last days when a new heaven and earth will replace the old (v7).\u00a0 God\u2019s Word has the power to create and destroy worlds.\u00a0 His Word is the most creative force that has ever existed or will exist.\u00a0\u00a0Just as it is by God\u2019s Word that the earth was created, destroyed and restored, so it is by God\u2019s Word that we live, die, and are resurrected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2<\/strong>\u00a0Peter<\/strong>\u00a03<\/strong>:8-9 (ESV)\u00a0<\/strong>
\n8\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.\u00a0<\/em>
\n9\u00a0<\/sup><\/em>\u00a0The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.<\/em><\/p>\n

On verses 8-9: \u00a0\u201cWhy has it been so long and Jesus still has not returned?\u201d That is a question people were asking in\u00a0Peter\u2019s day and it is a question people still ask today.\u00a0\u00a0Peter\u2019s answer: it\u2019s because of God\u2019s patience.\u00a0 God knows that the moment Jesus returns, those who reject Him will perish forever.\u00a0 So God waits until the appointed time.\u00a0 Like a man holding the door of a burning building open so that as many people as possible can escape,\u00a0God holds out hope that people who have not yet received Him will come to Him before it is too late.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Who is someone in your life that needs to know Jesus?<\/strong>\u00a0 Pray for opportunities and courage to share Jesus with them.<\/p>\n

Father, thank You that though heaven and earth pass away, Your Word will remain.\u00a0 May I hang onto Your life-changing Word and share it with others today.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n
