{"id":30052,"date":"2024-02-23T22:00:48","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T05:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/revelation-2_8-17-copy\/"},"modified":"2024-02-05T22:37:05","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T05:37:05","slug":"revelation-2_18-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/revelation-2_18-29\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Your Morning Star and Glorious King"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Revelation\u00a0 2:18-29 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+2%3A18-29&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30054 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/24-0224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/24-0224.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/24-0224-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s passage is\u00a0Revelation 2:18-29.\u00a0 As usual, I encourage you to read the passage yourself first and see what you can glean with the Holy Spirit\u2019s help, then read the GAME sharing below.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:18\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse\u00a018:\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 next message is for the church in Thyatira, a small city known for its agriculture and purple dye (see Acts 16:14).\u00a0 To the church in Thyatira, Jesus describes Himself as the Son of God, \u201cwhose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze\u201d (v18).\u00a0 According to some scholars, eyes like blazing fire and feet like burnished bronze are pictures of judgment.\u00a0 That\u2019s because Jesus has some tough words to speak to the church in Thyatira.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from Jesus?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When Jesus comes again, He will not come as a suffering servant, but as the most glorious king and the most powerful judge the world has ever seen.<\/strong>\u00a0 As much as I enjoy those cute, cartoony Sunday school images of Jesus, they don\u2019t really do justice to how awesome the glorified, reigning Son of God \u2013 with eyes of blazing fire and feet of burnished bronze \u2013 really is now.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:19 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 19:\u00a0 As usual in his messages to the churches,\u00a0<strong>Jesus begins with pointing out the good things He sees in His people before pointing out the areas where they need to improve.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Jesus is the greatest at speaking the truth in love.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:20 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 20:\u00a0 What exactly does Jesus mean by \u201c[y]ou tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess\u201d and who by her teaching \u201cmisleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols\u201d?\u00a0 It appears that the church in Thyatira had allowed a false teacher or prophet to influence their church.\u00a0 That false teacher\/prophet was likely telling the Christians in Thyatira to go ahead and commit sexual immorality (i.e. have sex outside of marriage) and to \u201ceat food sacrificed to idols\u201d (which, as we discussed\u00a0yesterday\u00a0when looking at Revelation 2:14, may be another way of saying to get romantically involved with unbelievers).\u00a0 It is unlikely that this false teacher\/prophet\u2019s actual name was Jezebel, for what spiritual leader would want to be named after the most wicked queen in Israel\u2019s history?\u00a0 Rather Jesus and John probably called this false teacher\/prophet Jezebel as a way to bring attention to the fact that this person\u2019s ministry was not beneficial but dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>We need to be vigilant about not allowing false teaching to influence what we believe or how we live.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:21-23 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I have given her\u00a0<strong>time to repent<\/strong>\u00a0of her immorality, but she is unwilling.<br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 21:\u00a0 Notice that before Jesus sentenced this false teacher\/prophet to their punishment, Jesus first gave the false teacher\/prophet time to repent.\u00a0 \u00a0What can we learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<strong>Toward sinners like us, Jesus would rather extend His mercy than express His wrath.\u00a0 So before Jesus decides to punish someone, He tends to give the person time to repent first.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0As merciful as Jesus is,\u00a0<strong>Jesus will not wait forever for a person to repent.<\/strong>\u00a0 When that person does not repent after a set time, Jesus will then bring the deserved punishment.\u00a0 In so doing, Jesus shows that He is the One \u201cwho searches hearts and minds\u201d and who repays people according to their deeds (v23).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:24-25 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan&#8217;s so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you):<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Only hold on to what you have until I come.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 24-25:\u00a0 For those who were not led astray by that false teacher\/prophet, Jesus encourages them to \u201conly hold on to what you have until I come\u201d (v25).\u00a0 That is,\u00a0<strong>hang on to your faith in Jesus and in God\u2019s Word no matter what.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:26-27 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations&#8211;<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8216;He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery&#8217;&#8211; just as I have received authority from my Father.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 26-27: \u00a0\u00a0Here Jesus promises to give two things to those who overcome and who do His will to the end.\u00a0 First, Jesus will give us \u201cauthority over the nations\u201d (v26).\u00a0 What kind of authority will He give us?\u00a0 Jesus describes this authority by referencing Psalm\u00a02:9 and saying, \u201cHe will rule them with an iron scepter; He will dash them to pieces like pottery\u201d.\u00a0 Here the word \u201crule\u201d in Greek is<em>\u00a0poimain\u014d\u00a0<\/em>and is the word for a pastor or shepherd.\u00a0 In other words, the authority Jesus will give us His people in His kingdom is the authority of a shepherd who watches over His flock.\u00a0 We will be helping Jesus shepherd nations in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0 Praise God that\u00a0<strong>Jesus has been given all authority in heaven and on earth, and yet He is so willing to share His authority with us His people (v26), just as He received authority from His Father<\/strong>\u00a0(v27b).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Revelation\u00a02:28-29 (NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I will also give him the morning star.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 28-29:\u00a0 There have been various interpretations for what \u201cthe morning star\u201d means, but I believe the best one is that \u201cthe morning star\u201d is a reference to Jesus Himself.\u00a0 Later on in\u00a0Revelation\u00a022:16 Jesus will call Himself \u201cthe bright Morning Star\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The prize we get for hanging onto our faith in Jesus is that we get Jesus Himself!\u00a0 We get to enjoy His presence and His love forever.\u00a0 Jesus is the greatest prize of all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus, in You we see perfect wrath and perfect mercy, perfect power and perfect gentleness, perfect truth and perfect grace.\u00a0 You hold all authority, and yet You share it with humility.\u00a0 There are no words we can say and no pictures we can draw to fully describe how awesome You are.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
