Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these.<br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.<br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.<\/p>\n<p>On verses 19-23:\u00a0 Here Jesus describes how intricately entwined he and the Father are:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jesus the Son can do nothing by himself but only does what he sees his Father doing (v19);<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Whatever the Father does Jesus the Son also does (v19);<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cFor the Father loves the Son\u201d (v20):\u00a0 It\u2019s a love relationship between the Father and Jesus the Son;<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201c\u2026and shows him all he does\u201d (v20): It\u2019s a relationship of transparency between the Father and Jesus the Son;<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Both the Father and Jesus the Son have the power and the discretion to give life (v21, 26);<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Father has the right to judge and yet entrusts that right to Jesus the Son (v22, 27)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Father wants all to honour His Son Jesus just as they honor Him (v23)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If you don\u2019t honour the Son Jesus, you don\u2019t honour the Father who sent him (v23)<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 5:24-25 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.<\/p>\n<p>On verses 24-25:\u00a0 Here Jesus describes the power of His word and His voice.\u00a0 When we hear and believe Jesus\u2019 word and respond positively to his voice, we receive eternal life, crossing over from death to life.\u00a0 It\u2019s as if God is knocking on the door of every person\u2019s heart and leaves it to us to respond.\u00a0 If we respond positively, the result is eternal life.\u00a0 If we respond negatively, the result is condemnation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 5:26-27 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.<\/p>\n<p>On verses 26-27:\u00a0 Here we see that Jesus is also somehow subject to the Father in the following ways:<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Father has somehow granted, or allowed, the Son to have life in himself (v26)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Father has given the Son authority to judge (v27)<br \/>\nAlso, notice in verse 27 that in addition to being the Son of God, here Jesus is quoted as calling himself the \u201cSon of Man\u201d.\u00a0 The term \u201cSon of Man\u201d comes from Daniel 7 in the Old Testament.\u00a0 It had overtones of divinity as well as humanity.\u00a0 Unlike politically charged terms like \u201cking of Israel\u201d or \u201cking of the Jews\u201d, Jesus could use a title like \u201cSon of Man\u201d without being misunderstood as trying to start some political revolution.\u00a0 It is no wonder Jesus referred to himself using this term more than any other title (over 80 times in the four Gospels and 13 times in John).<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 5:28-29 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and come out&#8211;those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.<\/p>\n<p>On verses 28-29:\u00a0 Here Jesus talks about the end times when the dead will rise and be judged.\u00a0 Don\u2019t misunderstand verse 29 to mean that somehow we can earn our way to heaven by doing good deeds.\u00a0 Both in the context of verses 19-30 as well as the overall message of John, it is safe to conclude that the \u201cgood\u201d that Jesus speaks of in verse 29 flows out of believing Jesus\u2019 words and responding positively to Jesus\u2019 voice, and the \u201cevil\u201d Jesus speaks of in verse 29 flows out of rejecting Jesus\u2019 words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 5:30 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.<\/p>\n<p>On verse 30:\u00a0 Here we see a couple more ways that Jesus subordinates himself to the Father.\u00a0\u00a0Jesus says that by himself he can do nothing, implying that his power is entwined with his relationship with his Father.\u00a0 He also says that he does not seek to please himself but to please the one who sent him, namely the Father.\u00a0 In other words, Jesus is out to serve his Father\u2019s agenda, not his own.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lord Jesus, what an intricate, close and beautiful relationship you have with the Father.\u00a0 I pray You would give me insight into this relationship, that I would better understand who You are and how You work.\u00a0 Like You, may I be focused on serving the Father\u2019s agenda, not my own.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2021 Justin Lim.
