It was winter,<br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon&#8217;s Colonnade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 22-23:\u00a0 The Feast of Dedication was a relatively new festival that the Jews first began celebrating in 164 B.C. to commemorate the reconstruction and rededication of the temple in Jerusalem by Judas Maccabeus in 165 B.C. after it was destroyed by the Syrian ruler Antiochus Epiphanes in 168 B.C.\u00a0 This Feast of Dedication involves a celebration of lights and is now more commonly known as Hanukkah, a festival that Jewish people continue to celebrate to this day.\u00a0 During Jesus\u2019 time on earth, whenever the Feast of Dedication was celebrated, there was an undercurrent of hope among the Jews that the Messiah would arrive at the temple and begin establishing Israel as an independent nation.\u00a0 It is in this context that the Jews surround Jesus as he is walking in the temple area in Solomon\u2019s Colonnade during the Feast of Dedication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 10:24-27 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The Jews gathered around him, saying, &#8220;How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus answered, &#8220;I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father&#8217;s name speak for me,<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 24-27:\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t beg the unconvinced and the unbelieving to believe in Him.\u00a0 Case in point:\u00a0 Jesus was famous for speaking in parables and using figures of speech to illustrate the truths he was teaching about himself.\u00a0 Some in the audience would get it and understand what Jesus meant, realizing both from his words and from his miracles that truly Jesus is the Messiah.\u00a0 Others, however, didn\u2019t get it.\u00a0 Jesus saw this as a way to distinguish those who believed and belonged to him from those who did not believe and did not belong to him.\u00a0 (See for example Luke 8:10.)<\/p>\n<p>When you consider the miracles that Jesus performed and the words that Jesus spoke, who do you think Jesus is?\u00a0 Is he the Son of God as he claims to be and the saviour king (the Messiah) that the Jews have been waiting for?\u00a0 Or is he someone else or something else?\u00a0 Your answer to this question, Jesus says, will reveal whether you are one of Jesus\u2019 sheep or not (v26-27).<\/p>\n<p><strong>John 10:28-30 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father&#8217;s hand.<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I and the Father are one.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 28-30:\u00a0 Here we learn some valuable truths:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Jesus is the giver of eternal life, meaning that even after we die physically, we will live on with God forever.\u00a0 You can\u2019t get eternal life from anywhere else or from anyone else. (v28)<\/li>\n<li>How do you receive eternal life?\u00a0 By placing your life in Jesus\u2019 hand and trusting Jesus to save you from your sins.\u00a0 When you do this, you are now safely and forever in Jesus\u2019 hand and no one can snatch you out of it (v28).\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s how secure your salvation is.\u00a0 The only way to lose your salvation is for you to jump out of Jesus\u2019 hand yourself by intentionally, consciously and repeatedly renouncing and denying your faith in Jesus Christ, also known as apostacy (Hebrews 6:4-6; Matthew 12:31-32; 2 Timothy 2:12).<\/li>\n<li>Jesus and the Father are one.\u00a0 The context of Jesus saying that he and his Father are one is in regards to how both Jesus and the Father hold the believer safely in their hand for eternity and how no one can snatch the believer away from either Jesus\u2019 hand (v28) or the Father\u2019s hand (v29).\u00a0 In other words,\u00a0<strong>if you believe in Jesus,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Jesus and the Father are both holding onto you and keeping you safe for eternity<\/strong>.\u00a0 Jesus and the Father are one in this purpose together.\u00a0 Pastor Jon Courson gives this illustration: just as a child might cross the street holding their mommy and daddy\u2019s hand, so we cross from death to life while holding in one hand the Father and holding in the other hand Jesus the Son.\u00a0 That is the main idea being communicated by verses 28-29, although verses 28-29 can also be taken to at least\u00a0<em>suggest<\/em>\u00a0that Jesus and the Father are united not only in purpose, but also in their identity.\u00a0 Elsewhere in the Gospel of John and in the New Testament, we learn more clearly that Jesus and the Father are not only one in purpose, but that Jesus is God and that God the Father and Jesus the Son are two persons of the Trinity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><em>Jesus, You are the giver of eternal life.\u00a0 Thank You that when I place my life in Your hands, trusting in You to save me, no one can snatch me away from You.\u00a0 Thank You that You are the Messiah that the Jews have been waiting for, the Saviour whom we all need, and the Son of God who gives eternal life.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
