{"id":31335,"date":"2024-05-31T22:00:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-01T05:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/john-13_12-20-copy\/"},"modified":"2024-05-21T14:04:22","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T21:04:22","slug":"john-13_21-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/john-13_21-30\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Is The Disciple Whom Jesus Loves?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>John 13:21-30\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+13%3A21-30&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31337 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/24-0601.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/24-0601.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/24-0601-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is John 13:21-30.\u00a0 I encourage you to read the passage yourself first and see what you can glean with the Holy Spirit\u2019s help, then read the GAME sharing below.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 13:21-22 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, &#8220;I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 21-22:\u00a0 Here we once again see Jesus\u2019 humanity.\u00a0 Jesus is emotionally impacted \u2013 \u201ctroubled in spirit\u201d (v21) \u2013 by the fact that someone he has loved and invested in for 3 years is going to betray him.\u00a0 From this I learn that\u00a0<strong>God is not stoic and emotionless.\u00a0 God is full of emotion and has an emotional response to the things we do and say.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 13:23 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 23: \u201c[T]he disciple whom Jesus loved\u201d was John\u2019s way of referring to himself, not to boast of his status as compared to other disciples, but as a way to humbly say, \u201cIf I\u2019m anything at all, I\u2019m loved by Jesus\u201d.\u00a0 Rather than pointing to his accomplishments and what he had done, John pointed to the fact that Jesus loved him.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise,\u00a0<strong>regardless of your performance, you are loved by Jesus<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Jesus\u2019 love for you is so unchanging, so unfailing, so unconditional, that, like John, you can let Jesus\u2019 love, and not your performance, define who you are.\u00a0 Like John, you can say, \u201cI too am the disciple whom Jesus loved.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 13:24-30 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, &#8220;Ask him which one he means.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, &#8220;Lord, who is it?&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Jesus answered, &#8220;It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.&#8221; Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.<br \/>\n<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. &#8220;What you are about to do, do quickly,&#8221; Jesus told him,<br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.<br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor.<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 24-30:\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t anyone understand that Jesus was pointing to Judas as the betrayer, especially if he says that his betrayer is \u201cthe one to whom I will give this piece of bread\u201d (v25) and then Jesus proceeds to give the piece of bread to Judas?\u00a0 \u00a0Isn\u2019t it obvious that it\u2019s Judas?\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s because in that situation, Jesus was casually passing the bread to Judas, who in turn was expected to pass it to others, and thus it wasn\u2019t clear that Judas was being singled out.\u00a0 In any event, the fact that Jesus knew what Judas would do, but the others did not, goes to show that\u00a0<strong>Jesus sees our hidden thoughts and secret motives even when they are not obvious to those around us<\/strong>.\u00a0 As Hebrews 4:13 says, \u201cNothing in all creation is hidden from God&#8217;s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Since God sees our secret thoughts that no one else sees, may we live in humility before God knowing that nothing is hidden from Him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, verse 27 says, \u201cAs soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s a reminder that\u00a0<strong>just as receiving Jesus requires that we open up our heart and be willing to receive him, so that\u2019s how it largely works with Satan as well.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>To a great extent, Satan can only have as much room as we let him have.\u00a0 So be careful to keep the door open for Jesus and keep the door closed shut on Satan.<\/strong>\u00a0 As Ephesians 4:27 says, \u201cdo not give the devil a foothold\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus, thank You that despite all of my weaknesses, flaws and mistakes, I am still the disciple whom You love.\u00a0 Thank You for Your unconditional, unchanging, unfailing love in my life.\u00a0 Thank You for loving me even when You know in advance the times and ways that I would break Your heart.\u00a0 I praise You for being faithful, even when I am faithless.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
