Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 1-2:\u00a0 Here John quotes Jesus as praying to the Father.\u00a0 Chapter 17 of John is the longest recorded prayer of Jesus in Scripture.\u00a0 Verse 2 says that the Father granted authority to Jesus over all people so that Jesus might\u00a0<em>give\u00a0<\/em>eternal life to people.\u00a0 When the Father gives you authority, it\u2019s not so that you can personally be famous, wealthy or powerful.\u00a0 God gives you authority so that you can give, help and be a blessing to others.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:3 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 3:\u00a0 Eternal life is not about our performance, our hard work, or our merit.\u00a0 Eternal life is about knowing the Father and knowing Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Also, notice that Jesus calls the Father \u201cthe only true God\u201d.\u00a0 For people who think there are many gods or no gods, or who castigate people as bigots for believing that there is only one God, you\u2019re up against Jesus who says the Father is the one and only true God.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:4 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 4:\u00a0 Jesus didn\u2019t start well; he finished well too.\u00a0 Likewise, we give God glory here on earth when we do and complete the work He give us to do.\u00a0 May you give God glory by completing the task He gave you to do on earth.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:5 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 5:\u00a0 Jesus had a certain glory in heaven that he relinquished when he came down to earth.\u00a0 Here we see him getting ready to reclaim that lost glory again.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:6-9 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 6-9:\u00a0 Here Jesus prays for his disciples.\u00a0 When he speaks to the Father about his disciples, notice that he speaks about them to the Father in the most positive light.\u00a0 He makes them look like a million bucks, even though the Gospels show how silly, self-centered and unreliable the disciples could be.\u00a0 Was Jesus lying to his Father about his disciples?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Rather, Jesus was focusing on the good that he saw in his disciples and was covering their sins and failures with his love.\u00a0 As 1 Peter 4:8 says, \u201cAbove all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.\u201d\u00a0 It is amazing to think that that is how Jesus treats us before the Father, presenting us \u201cas a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless\u201d (Ephesians 5:27).\u00a0 What an amazing friend we have in Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:10a (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0All I have is yours, and all you have is mine\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 10a:\u00a0 Here we see how secure Jesus is in his relationship with the Father: he acknowledges that all he has belongs to the Father, and also declares that all that the Father has belongs to him.\u00a0 No wonder Jesus never felt the need to be praised or approved by anyone else; he was so secure in his Father\u2019s love.\u00a0 I want to be that way too.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:10b (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u2026And glory has come to me through them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 10b:\u00a0 Somehow the disciples made Jesus proud and brought him glory.\u00a0 In what way do you as a disciple of Jesus make Jesus proud?\u00a0 Here are a few:<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0\u00a0Just like we take pride in finishing a project we\u2019ve worked hard at or fixing something that is broken, God takes pride in saving you and calling you his own.<br \/>\n(2)\u00a0\u00a0God is proud of you like a Father is proud of their child.\u00a0\u00a0When my sons were born, about each of them I said, \u201cthough he weighs just 7 pounds, I feel the weight of God\u2019s glory when I hold this child, knowing he\u2019s my son.\u201d\u00a0 God is proud of you like that too.<br \/>\n(3)\u00a0\u00a0When you display Christ to others, Jesus is proud of you.<br \/>\n(4)\u00a0 When you trust Jesus, he is proud of you.\u00a0 As Charles Spurgeon said, \u201cChrist is more glorified by a sinner&#8217;s humble faith than by a seraph&#8217;s loudest song.\u201d<br \/>\n(5)\u00a0\u00a0When you speak words of praise to God even in your trouble, your Father is proud of you.<br \/>\n(6)\u00a0\u00a0When you tell others about Christ in wise, courageous ways, the Father is proud of you.<br \/>\n(7)\u00a0\u00a0When you work hard to advance Christ\u2019s kingdom where you are, God is proud of you.<\/p>\n<p>It amazes me to think that we make Jesus proud and that he experienced not shame and embarrassment by looking at us, but rather pride and joy.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 heart, you are his pride and joy.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>John 17:11-12 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name&#8211;the name you gave me&#8211;so that they may be one as we are one.<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 11-12:\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 protecting, shepherd\u2019s heart for his disciples is so evident here.\u00a0 He wants none of them to be harmed, thus he asks the Father to protect them.\u00a0 Now if Jesus\u2019 first disciples were martyred for their faith, as church history tells us, does that mean the Father did not answer Jesus\u2019 request to protect them?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I think it just goes to show that Jesus\u2019 idea of protection is not always the same as ours.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 focus when it came to protection was always in respect of eternity because eternity mattered most to Jesus, not the temporary trouble, pain and grief we experience on earth.\u00a0 Jesus saw our lives through the lens of eternity, and we would be wise to do the same.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lord Jesus, thank You for presenting me before the Father as blameless, radiant and holy.\u00a0 You more than anyone know all the ways I have fallen short of God\u2019s glory, and yet You cover my sins with Your love, You speak about me with pride, and You protect me with Your power.\u00a0 Thank You for being such an amazing friend.\u00a0 I pray I would live like You and see things from Your eternal lens more and more.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
