{"id":31833,"date":"2024-07-10T22:00:16","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T05:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts_2_14-21-copy\/"},"modified":"2024-07-02T15:45:39","modified_gmt":"2024-07-02T22:45:39","slug":"acts_2_22-28-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts_2_22-28-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Death Couldn\u2019t Hold Him Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Acts 2:22-28\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+2%3A22-28&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31835 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/24-0711.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/24-0711.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/24-0711-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is\u00a0Acts\u00a02:22-28.\u00a0 As usual,\u00a0I encourage you to read the passage yourself first and see what you can glean with the Holy Spirit\u2019s help, then read the GAME sharing below.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Acts<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>22<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>-23 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>22<\/sup>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u00a0&#8220;Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>23\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0This man was handed over to you by God&#8217;s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a022-23:\u00a0 After explaining in\u00a0Acts\u00a02:14-21 where this outpouring of the Holy Spirit was coming from, Peter transitions into talking about Jesus.\u00a0 He begins by describing Jesus as a man accredited by God and through whom God did many miracles, wonders and signs (v22).\u00a0 He then speaks of how, in accordance with God\u2019s plan, Jesus was handed over and put to death on the cross, saying to his audience that \u201cyou, with the help of wicked men, put him to death\u201d (v23).<\/p>\n<p>Peter, who was very much a people pleaser in the past, pulls\u00a0no punches when telling his audience that they put Jesus to death.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>With the filling of the Holy Spirit comes a boldness in you that you wouldn&#8217;t otherwise have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Acts<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:24 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>24\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 24:\u00a0 When you are the resurrection and the life, when you are the way, the truth and the life,\u00a0<strong>when you are life itself, death cannot hold you down<\/strong>.\u00a0 That\u2019s what happened with Jesus: after being killed on the cross, Jesus rose from the grave.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Likewise, when your life is in Christ, death won\u2019t hold you down either; you have way more life to live even after you die.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Acts<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:25-28 (NIV)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>25\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0David said about him: &#8220;&#8216;I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>26\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope,<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>27\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><em>\u00a0You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 25-28:\u00a0 Here Peter quotes Psalm 16:8-11 and says that this was David writing about the resurrection of Jesus.\u00a0 Peter is effectively showing that\u00a0<strong>the Old Testament Scriptures which his Jewish audience was accustomed to hearing had been pointing to Jesus and his resurrection all along<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, notice that the Holy Spirit had given Peter, a man without formal education, tremendous insight into Scripture and boldness to share Scripture that he didn&#8217;t show before.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lesson for us here:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>to understand Scripture, we need the help of the Holy Spirit who authored Scripture.\u00a0 To share Scripture effectively with others, we need the power of the Holy Spirit as well.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0So let&#8217;s ask the Holy Spirit often to give us insight into His Word and boldness to share it.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in verses 25 through 28, when Peter quotes Psalm 16, notice how often joy, gladness and confidence are associated with God&#8217;s presence.\u00a0<strong>When we know that God is with us and we fix our eyes on Him, there is joy, gladness and confidence that go beyond our circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus, I praise You for being the One who is stronger than death.\u00a0 No matter what my circumstances are like, may I fix my eyes on You and as a result have much joy and confidence today.\u00a0\u00a0In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
