{"id":32446,"date":"2024-09-01T22:00:44","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T05:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts-19_13-27-copy\/"},"modified":"2024-08-02T09:48:02","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T16:48:02","slug":"acts-19_28-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/acts-19_28-41\/","title":{"rendered":"Quieting the Unrest in Your Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex_column av_one_full  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  avia-builder-el-0  avia-builder-el-no-sibling  \" style='border-radius:0px; '><section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Acts 19:28-41 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+19%3A28-41&amp;version=NIV\" rel=\"noopener\">(CLICK HERE FOR\u00a0BIBLE VERSES)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32448 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/24-0902.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/24-0902.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ocbf.ca\/2019\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/24-0902-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hi GAMErs,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is Acts 19:28-41.\u00a0 As usual,\u00a0I encourage you to read the passage yourself first and see what you can glean with the Holy Spirit\u2019s help, then read the GAME sharing below.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 19:28 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>28\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When they heard<\/em>\u00a0this, they were furious and began shouting: &#8220;Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On verse 28:\u00a0 Artemis was believed to be the many breasted goddess of fertility and should not be confused with Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt.\u00a0 According to the New American Commentary, the temple of Artemis was located in Ephesus and was very large at over 50,000 square feet (about 165 feet by 345 feet).\u00a0 Ephesus was thus the centre for the worship of Artemis and Ephesus\u2019 economy was closely connected with Artemis worship.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 19:29-31 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul&#8217;s traveling companions from Macedonia, and rushed as one man into the theater.<br \/>\n<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.<br \/>\n<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 29-31:\u00a0 Chaos erupts in Ephesus as an angry pro-Artemis crowd is intent on doing something to Paul for preaching that Artemis is no god at all.\u00a0 Unable to find Paul, the pro-Artemis crowd grabs Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul\u2019s traveling companions, and occupy the largest public building in Ephesus, the amphitheatre, with a seating capacity of approximately 25,000 people.\u00a0 Paul sees this as an opportunity to preach, but both his team and some Asian government officials, who were friends of Paul\u2019s, stop him from going inside for fear that something might happen to him (v30-32).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 19:32 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 32:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Sometimes crowds can form and everyone in the crowd might look very united.\u00a0 But chances are, in most crowds, you\u2019ll find a wide range of people with different levels of commitment to the cause that has apparently brought them all together.<\/strong>\u00a0 That is why at Thrive Church we want to move people from the crowd to the core, from being superficially connected to committed members of our church family.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 19:33-34 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The Jews pushed Alexander to the front, and some of the crowd shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people.<br \/>\n<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: &#8220;Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The city clerk quieted the crowd\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 33-34:\u00a0 To avoid being blamed for all this commotion, some Jews push their representative Alexander to the front to explain what is going on.\u00a0 Realizing Alexander is a Jew like Paul, the crowd ignores what Alexander is trying to say and instead chant the praises of Artemis for about two hours.\u00a0 Who is finally able to quiet the crowd?\u00a0 The city clerk.\u00a0 That is because the city clerk was the chief administrator of Ephesus and had authority that Alexander did not have.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise,\u00a0<strong>who is the only one who has the authority to quiet our hearts and put a stop to the unrest within us? \u00a0It\u2019s Jesus, the one who has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18)<\/strong>.\u00a0 So when Jesus is speaking, be sure to quiet your heart and listen.\u00a0 Otherwise you&#8217;ll be in trouble.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>And if you want to settle the unrest in your heart, go where Jesus is and take time to listen to Him.\u00a0 For with Jesus there is rest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 19:35 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: &#8220;Men of Ephesus, doesn&#8217;t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verse 35:\u00a0 What does the city clerk mean by \u201cher image, which fell from heaven\u201d (v35)?\u00a0 Scholars believe that this was a meteorite which landed and possibly looked like a many-breasted woman that reminded people of Artemis.\u00a0 Thus \u201c[m]eteorites were often associated with the worship of the Mother Goddess.\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thrivechurch.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214&amp;id=87e36dd4f0&amp;e=b608fe02a2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" name=\"m_-8023309255663111309_m_-8981149312784739189_m_-2578066573898298169__ftnref1\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thrivechurch.us12.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D77ec4e1ba0a9c0c7b9605a214%26id%3D87e36dd4f0%26e%3Db608fe02a2&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1722703381513000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1utmhgrtSRy-xAmGqmiDuM\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consider this:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When God wanted to show humanity an image of what He is like, He sent Jesus, a human being, God in the flesh,\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cthe image of the invisible God\u201d (Colossians 1:15).\u00a0 Jesus is God\u2019s \u201cmeteorite\u201d from heaven, the stone that was rejected but which has now become the capstone of our lives.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Acts 19:36-41 (NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to be quiet and not do anything rash.<br \/>\n<sup>37\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.<br \/>\n<sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.<br \/>\n<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.<br \/>\n<sup>40\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of today&#8217;s events. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 36-41:\u00a0 The city clerk has some wise counsel for the unruly crowd.\u00a0 He reminds them that the Christians they were angry at had not done anything wrong (v37).\u00a0 He also tells them that if they really have an issue, to take it to the courts or settle it in a legal assembly (v38-39), but not to a senseless riot which would put them all in danger with the Roman government (v40).<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from this?\u00a0\u00a0<strong>When you are angry and upset, don\u2019t do anything rash.\u00a0 Be thoughtful and wise in how you express your anger.\u00a0 Otherwise, instead of solving anything, you\u2019ll just end up making the situation worse and bringing more trouble on yourself and others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Holy Spirit, thank You for showing me through Your Word today not to do anything rash when I\u2019m angry or upset, and that I need to let Jesus Christ, the authority over my life, quiet my heart and speak to me before I lose control.\u00a0 I pray also that You would make us so effective at bringing in a crowd of people who might not even know why they are here and transforming them into a core of committed followers of Jesus.
