Then read the GAME sharing below.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>Samuel<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>7<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>:<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>1<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>&#8211;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>2<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0(NIV)\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0<\/em><em>After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0<em>he said to Nathan the prophet, &#8220;Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses\u00a01-2:\u00a0 When God had given David rest from all his enemies around him, David\u2019s heart was still restless for God.\u00a0 David restlessly dreamed of building a house for the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>You can tell what is in a person\u2019s heart by what stirs their heart even when their circumstances are peaceful.<\/strong>\u00a0 Like David, I believe God has placed a dream in your heart to do something significant for His glory.\u00a0 That dream will keep you awake and gnaw at you even when \u2013 or especially when \u2013 life seems relatively peaceful.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>2 Samuel 7:3-17\u00a0(NIV)<\/strong><br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Nathan replied to the king, &#8220;Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the\u00a0LORD\u00a0is with you.&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0That night the word of the\u00a0LORD\u00a0came to Nathan, saying:<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Go and tell my servant David, &#8216;This is what the\u00a0LORD\u00a0says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.<br \/>\n<sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, &#8220;Why have you not built me a house of cedar?&#8221;&#8216;<br \/>\n<sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;Now then, tell my servant David, &#8216;This is what the\u00a0LORD\u00a0Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth.<br \/>\n<sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. &#8220;&#8216;The\u00a0LORD\u00a0declares to you that the\u00a0LORD\u00a0himself will establish a house for you:<br \/>\n<sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.<br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men.<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.<br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On verses 3-17:\u00a0 At first, when Nathan heard David share his dream about building a house for God, Nathan spoke from his own spirit and told David to do whatever he wants (v3).\u00a0 But then the Spirit of God stops Nathan later that night and says, \u201cWait a minute, Nathan.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got something else to say to David.\u201d (v4)\u00a0 Nathan then shares some game-changing promises from God to David:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 The promise that God would exalt David\u2019s name to be like the names of the greatest men in history (v9)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 The promise that God would provide a safe place for His people Israel (v10-11)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 The promise that God would give David rest from all his enemies (v11b)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 But most importantly, the promise that God would use a descendant of David &#8212; one who would come from David&#8217;s own body (v12) &#8212; to build a house for David (rather than the other way around). \u00a0That house would not just be a temporary physical building but a kingdom that would last into eternity \u2013 \u201cforever\u201d (v13).<\/p>\n<p>Regarding this last promise, we might be tempted to think that the Lord here is talking about Solomon who would succeed his father David as king and eventually build the temple in Jerusalem.\u00a0 But when you read verses 11-16 with New Testament eyes, you will see that\u00a0<strong>God\u2019s promises to David here are not fulfilled in David&#8217;s son Solomon (whose kingdom did not last) but rather in the Son of David Jesus Christ, whose kingdom lasts forever.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the Lord says in verse 14, \u201cI will be his father, and he will be my son\u201d, it\u2019s talking about Jesus (Hebrews\u00a01:5).<\/p>\n<p>When verse 14b says, \u201cWhen he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men\u201d, this is foretelling how Jesus would be punished and flogged for our wrongdoing.\u00a0 And yet God would never stop loving this Son despite all the punishment this Son would endure (v15).<\/p>\n<p>Praise God!\u00a0 Just as David would live and reign forever through Jesus Christ (v16), so we too get to live and reign forever through Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p><em>King Jesus, You are the fulfillment of all these promises the Father spoke to David.\u00a0 You are the Son of God.\u00a0 You are the One who was flogged for our failures. You are the One whose kingdom is forever.\u00a0 Thank You that just as David lives and reigns forever through You, so I too can live and reign forever through You.\u00a0 In Jesus\u2019 name, AMEN!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2022 Justin Lim.
